i live in england and have an idea for a buisness. i want to open a takeaway/resturant that serves only healthy, low fat and low cal foods. also i would try and cater for as many different diets as possible. there is currently nothing like this where i live, and the question i am posting is whether you think there is a big enough demand for this type of thing?confused3

There is no doubt that, generally speaking, there is a big demand for health food products, it is a triving industry. However, as with any industry one is thinking of breaking into, you have to determine your market sector (e.g. who you are aiming your products at) and the precise nature of your product.

I would suggest that a plan to 'cater for as many different diets as possible' holds many pitfalls. For one thing you can bet money that there is probably someone catering specifically to each individual sector, that you plan to cater to collectively, and being 'average' at many things whilst there are those who, individually, are 'great' at all, may be fraught with difficulties. You have to be practical and (initially at least} narrow your product range in order to perfect your service and product delivery before expanding it to other 'taste requirements'.

I am adverse to going into too much detail here regarding market research, product development and business strategy etc. Especially with so little information on the precise nature of your commercial venture, (not to mention with no one to send my bill to.....lol), but I do seriously suggest you untake some research into the market potential (i.e. likely demand) of whatever it is you plan to bring to the market place.

In our heads, an idea can seem just the thing for ground breaking success, but the logistics of making it happen can make the 'dream' and the 'reality' seem miles apart.

Also don't forget that already established outlets are already begining to add healthier options on there menu so you have these to compete with.

Like Backatya said trying to cater for all diets may be a large order sometimes simplicity is the key and you may be better off to start to master catering for one type of diet.....make sure you do your market research well.

I eat healthy 90% of the time and these are a few things I will consider before I was to walk into a business such as what you propose

1. Does your low cal mean low fat but high dosage of hidden sugar which is often the case

2. are your products free from artificial perservative/gm etc

3. Who and where are your suppliers

Most people who eat healthy and are serious with it actually feel that eating out is a danger to their health as they can be sure of how the food was prepared and ingrediants used compared to their own home preparations niceone.gif

You know, I actually thought about the same thing here in the states. Ideas are not about who makes them up but more about who gets them out first. So, I encourage you to do it because it really is needed. I would be the first in line! Take care.

The high protein diet could actually be on the menu. There are not that many athletes in comparison to the general population to sustain the profits of an multi-chain sports diet restaurant. But there are a large amount of people trying to lose weight in convenient ways. What's more convenient than a healthy fast food place that delivers? It would suit me well. The concept would require intensive market research, but it would be worth it , especially in obesity ridden nations.
