Unhappy Bells Palsy - 25-10-07, 09:09 PM

This is basically where the muscles in one side of your face decide they arent going to work anymore leaving the face numb and lifeless. It can be difficult talking, eating and even closing the eye on the affected side of the face, causing it to dry out and become irritated.

Anyone had this? If so how long did it last and did you fully recover?

Thanks Ladyday, didnt know it affected children and thought it can be brought on by stress, but obviously not necessarily.

A cousin of mine had this. Never forget it. Slept with the window open and one day woke up and couldnt move one side of his face. We thought he was joking until we saw that he couldnt even eat properly.

It lasted a few months and even years later you can see that when he smiles or laughs it stilll is restricted ever so slightly.

I thought it was caused by catching chill/cold in your face.

Thats it BT, just comes and goes in the dead of the night like Santa Claws, leaving your face mash up.

Could be bad duppy. A real vindictive *******.The right oil and powder might do the trick. I would seriously consider changing the bedroom around. It worked with my cous ...and the mind... well..powers!!

Nah bro Ive seen its effects so know its not a joke thing. But its one reason why I avoid putting bed next to a window. Was the complainant sleeping by the window by any chance.

Yep I know someone who had it years ago but we were older teenagers. He got it as a passenger in a car where the window was open and the breeze was hitting him one side of his face. He recovered and explained that it was the cold on his face that brought it on.

There are a number of causes of facial weakness, Bell's palsy being the most common. (Bell's palsy is also called 'idiopathic' palsy which by definition implies that the cause is unknown).

Other causes include Ramsay-Hunt syndrome which is facial weakness caused by the chicken pox virus (Herpes Zoster) which usually responds quite well to medications (in fact it is thought that many patients with Bell's palsy have Ramsay-Hunt syndrome so are treated as such). Middle ear infections (otitis media) can also cause facial weakness. Very rarely conditions such as multiple sclerosis, tumours of the parotid salivary gland and sarcoidosis can also cause facial weakness.

Most people that have facial or Bell's palsy recover . This can take a few days to a few weeks or sometimes months.

'Patient UK' provides useful information on this.
