Fibroids can be treated surgically as you pointed out, either with a myomectomy which is an operation that involves directly cutting out the fibroid and involves making a skin incision a bit like that of a caeserean section. Fibroids can also be removed with a resectoscope if they are small enough which means they are removed via the vaginal route and thus does not require a surgical inscion.
Hormonal methods can also be used. These hormones shrink fibroids and this method is usually used before a myomectomy is attempted. However, this treatment does have side-effects and the fibroids may increase in size once the treatment is discontinued.
One newer treatment called 'embolisation' involves blocking or ligating the artery that feeds the fibroid and eventually causes it to shrink. It does however have complications including the risk of a possible hysterectomy so is generally not recommended for women who want to preserve their fertility.
