Cops: Dad ordered to pay child support kills son

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man who initially told police gunmen kidnapped his 2 1/2-year-old son was arrested Saturday, accused of committing an "extremely hideous" murder because he was ordered to pay child support, Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

Danny Platt confessed, told police where to find the child's body and will be booked on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Ja' Shawn Powell, Riley said at a news conference.

"He had said he would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," which he recently had been ordered to do, Riley said.

Riley said he did not know the amount of child support and would not describe how the boy was killed, saying the coroner would do that after the autopsy was complete. The coroner's spokesman did not immediately return a call.

"The mother is in a safe place," Riley said.

Although he had visiting rights, Platt, 22, of New Orleans, had never visited the boy until he picked him up Friday, Riley said.

Police put out a notice Saturday asking people to look for the boy and saying his father had told them three men with dreadlocks and AK-47 rifles had piled out of an SUV and kidnapped Ja' Shawn shortly before midnight Friday.

"His story never really added up," Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."

Riley said Platt eventually confessed and told officers where to find the body.

Police spokesman officer Janssen Valencia said he did not know if Platt has an attorney.

Platt had only a couple of "very minor" previous arrests, Riley said.

"How does an individual — because he's ordered to pay child support to take care of a kid ... believe that this is so much pressure that he would face — he would do this hideous act to his own child, or to any child, and think that is a remedy to paying child support?" Riley said. "I mean there are some sick individuals in this society, and this gentleman is clearly one."

He won't last a year at Angola.....

I was visiting inmates one year and talked with an inmate from some place outside Opelousas where a guy has gone into a church and killed his wife, son and two others and wounded several others.

The trail had not even occured, this guy had already planned what he was going to do to this guy who himself was paralyzed from being shot during a shootout with police. He said he was going to turn over his chair a couple of times before stabbing him.

The wife was his cousin. New Orleans is well represented at the "Farm". The word is certainly out and taking this guy out will be like winning a medal of honor..

He may not last a month. When it comes to sexual offenses and child deaths, a criminal might as well ask for the death penalty because that'd be better than what they'd have to face in prison. They roll the same way in my state.

I'm mostly anti-death penalty, but for shit like this......

He may very well last a long time in prison.

If he gets life or goes on death row, they'll send him to max or supermax. If it's life, he'll go to max; he'll be housed in a special protective unit with child molesters, ex-cops etc... He'll have his own cell and be on lockdown 23 hours with one supervised hour for exercise... He'll get his meals in his cell, he'll have two showers a week in a one man stall (supervised) and all in all, he'll be living off our taxes for a long time. And probably get some rehabilitation type classes while he's in there. There's no way they'll send him to general population in the yard.

If he goes on death row, he's headed to supermax, then he'll be one lucky fool coz nobody'll be able to touch him in there.

It ain't Shawshank Redemption these days.

These days, you're more likely to get killed or raped in prison if you commit a 'regular' crime and are sent to general pop. O.J. is more likely to die in prison than this child killer is.

You are correct, he may be headed for camp F for life. He better have a strong mind because mental suffering is a lot worse than physical suffering.

so for a few months he will be hoping for either the death penalty or life. what a miscarriage of justice it would be if he recieved a lesser sentence?

but for the rest of his life he will only feel comfortable out of the presence of others.....

That's what's so jacked up. The worst offenders get the most protection.

Some knucklehead 19 yr old first offender kid in for three years is more likely to die, get raped or shanked in prison than this murderer.

The logic is so twisted.

the thing is.....between now and when he gets sentenced.....he's in GP of whatever facility they are holding him at.

hopefully some of the girls relatives or friends are there...

i would hope that he would get turned loose on some technicality...he needs to be dealt with slowly....

this guy makes jeff dahmer look civil...
