Form the BBC (7 February 2005):
Abuse 'library' carer walks free
A foster carer who created the largest library of child abuse images ever recorded in the UK walked free from Manchester Crown Court on Monday.
John Harrison, 55, of Denton, Greater Manchester, has already served more than half of his two and a half year sentence while awaiting trial.
He admitted conspiracy to distribute indecent images and to making and possessing the pictures.
Harrison was banned from working with children indefinitely. [/b]
'Sexual gratification'
His home was raided in October 2003 after the FBI charged American paedophile Earl Webster Cox, from Colorado Springs, who is described as one of the most important players in the world of paedophilia.
Harrison was traced after an international investigation by the FBI.
Detectives found 46 hard drives at his home, and described the images found on his computer as some of the most shocking they have ever seen.
The court heard he collected the images after becoming the administrator of internet bulletin boards for paedophiles, known worldwide as the "The Brotherhood of Sharing."
Harrison admitted to the police that he got "sexual gratification" from the pictures.
The court was told the police stopped counting his images, saying it would have taken one man three months in a working week or 500 hours to analyse his collection.
The largest amount of images previously recorded was 600,000.
Harrison was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for life.
He began committing his offences in January 1997, when the maximum sentence for his crimes was capped at three years.
The maximum is now set at 10 years.

From The Sun (8 February 2005):
Pervert's child **** snaps
By GUY PATRICK
A FOSTER carer walked free last night despite hoarding more than
ONE MILLION sick child **** pictures.
The total of images collected by dad-of-five John Harrison, 53, is almost
DOUBLE the largest uncovered in Britain previously.
But the married internet pervert from Denton, Greater Manchester, was released by a court on licence.
He received only a 2½-year sentence having been charged under an old law because the offences dated to 1998.
The sentence could have been ten years under the new revised law — and Judge John Burke QC said he would have liked to impose that.
But Harrison, having been in custody on remand for 16 months, was
freed.
Norman Brennan, of Victims of Crime, said: “This is an absolute disgrace. This sentence is no deterrent.
Dee Edwards, of Mothers Against Murder and Aggression, fumed: “How can a man like this be allowed to ever leave prison?
Manchester Crown Court heard that Harrison became administrator of internet bulletin boards called The Brotherhood of Sharing.
These were used by paedophiles across the world and contained scenes of sadism, bestiality and babies being tortured and raped.
Jobless Harrison
, who repaired computers as a hobby, was snared in a global operation against paedophiles, which led to 66 arrests.
He admitted 32 specimen counts of making indecent images and conspiracy to distribute indecent images.
Judge Burke told him: “It’s because people like you derive twisted gratification from these disgusting images that these children, some babes in arms, are defiled.
Police took from Harrison’s home 46 hard drives but examined only 25 because of the quantity of photos.
Harrison was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Tory Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, Andrew Mitchell, said: “That this man is allowed to walk free makes a mockery of the law.
