A medicine specifically developed to treat black patients is set to become the first race-specific treatment to go on sale.
Heart failure drug BiDil has been designed toincrease the levels of Nitric oxide in the blood, low levels are a major cause of high blood pressure whic leads to heart attacks.
In trails last year the company tested 1050 african americans, tests showed that BiDil combined with standard therapies cut the annual death rate from heart disease by 43 per cent.
The drug has proved controversial with many scientist disputing there is a genetic difference between races.
NitroMeds chief medical officer and cardiologist Manuel Worcel insisted;'There has been alot of controversey-but we know we have to take ethnic origin into account'.However Minnesota researcher Dr Jonathan Kahn who studies legal and ethical issues surrounding medicine, disagreed. 'Some people talk about heart failure as a different disease in blacks in what i can only describe as an irresponsible manner'.
What do you think?
