Interesting list....only problem is, Marx was never a philosopher! We even discussed this in my Philosophy class and everyone agreed that the man was just an economicaltheorist...i think the BBC are running a bit dry here....even the top ten that they have listed as *the world's greatest Philosophers* is a joke....the world's greatest according to whom exactly?confused3
This is just like Chanel4's the greatest this, the greatest that...only problem is ONLYa minority of whites inthe Westvotesfor this kind of none sense....the rest of the world is not really aware of Hume....the man was racist looney...see, i bet they didn't know that did they?....jokers...lol

@moke
Young men born in Britain, were deceived into thinking that various conflicts around the world, between competing groups fighting over land, oil and other resources, were caused by enemies of Islam. In reality, these wars and struggles are capitalist caused wars between owners, and would-be owners, of valuable natural and man-made resources.
The London bombers were told that Blair and Bush were responsible for the deaths of their fellow-religious “Moslem brothers and sisters. They were shown video and pictures of dead and injured Moslems in the process of indoctrinating them to want revenge for what they came to see as an attack on “their people by “our people.
However, what the masterminds behind such brainwashing and terrorist atrocities want above all else is ownership and control of territory, oil, water, diamonds and the like, and they use religion as a tool to divide and manipulate people on one side to fight against others, in order to bring that about.
Marx explained such thinking and behaviour over 100 years ago, and it is as germane today as it was a century ago....

Does that mean he wasn't as useless as philosophers?

What is a philosopher? What is "just an economical theorist"?

So tell me, in your philosophy class did you come to the conclusion that 'economic relations determine/influence/shape all other aspects of a society?...

Or did you disagree, strongly?

If we do not have an accurate analysis of the problem, we cannot possibly develop a good strategy to resolve it.

I agree this 'survey' or 'whatever' is just another of those "Most Popular" notions...What did you call it? "Greatest this..."?
In terms of some political/nationalist icons, they serve to 'de-politicalise' and bring into the 'Mass PopularCulture'...(you know, the T-shirts, posters, even filmsect)
However, I am actually impressed and slightly inspired, that Karl Marx is up there in these times...Given the 'popular ideology'
And yes the 'voters' were...a minority of whites inthe West
But wasn't it the 'whites of the West' Marx was addressing?
And he never claimed to be a 'philosopher'...
"The philosophers, have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it "
But Marx also interpreted the world, his world, that is...'the dawn of capitalism'-white and western
It is ironic really that the major (and in my view only)slightly realistic, critique of Marx is that he was an 'economnic determinist' No one can confidently argue that his 'interpretation of his world' was incorrect...remember Marx was arguing against the established (or traditional) 'philosophical opinion' of his generation
Did your class concur that Hegels was also not a philosopher?
If we do not have an accurate analysis of the problem, we cannot possibly develop a good strategy to resolve it.
