This should be of no suprise. I've had my bag searched at my workplace twice since the bombings...strangely the security guards let a white girl with a small back pack go through unchallenged.

Sorry but I think this is pure madness, it seems to me that the Terrorist have won hands down, they have made us fearful, they have forced the goverments across the Western world enact strct state wide controls on its citzens..
Soon from now we will be seeing road blocks and widespread street searches and people hassling other people over their papers.. restriction on movements, thought control, speech control..
Does this remind you of anywhere yet? Like Hitlers Germany, Stalinist Russia, Pre Apartheid Azania, Rhodesia... It seems to me that instead of going forward we are steadily regressing back to a primitive totaliterian state..sad, really sad..

bags and packages
How pissed off will people be if they're carrying a present for someone and a police officer insists it's opened and unwrapped?

Not logistically possible in a city the size of London or NY.
Media will simply have to wake up to the fact that there is nothing that can be done about such things and stop looking an easy story...

I don't think it's madness, if lives would be saved.

Blaqwoman
Lives wouldn't and couldn't be saved by a cosmetic gesture like this. This is a thing whipped up by the media who demand "action" be taken when terrorism happens. Gov run around being reactionary as hell and propose this sort of nonsense.
It can't work. Not enough manpower and far too many commuters. In addition, the terrorists will simply pick a next target, it doesnt have to be the transport system. Why not a shopping mall or a church? You can't guard everything.
People have to realise that once begun, terrorism is not beatable and any "war on terror" using methods like searching bags is simply a confidence booster...
Uncomfortable truth is that there is nothing you can do.

So someone in authority came up with this and actually believed it was a good idea?
Picture it:
A suicide bomber, who's goal is to blow himself or herself up and to take whoever is in the vacinity along with them, comes up to the search desk. Put's their bag, rucksack down and the police rummages through it and.... hey presto, finds a bomb.
'Hey you got a bomb in here' he says.
The bomber responds,
'Damn, you foiled me. Us suicide bombers don't stand a chance with this stop and search tactic. If only I wasn't so stupid to go along with it but instead just set the thing off right here in the middle of all these people before I let you search my bag'

Respect
There are those who feel that the only way to ‘prove their own worth’ is by ‘devaluing the worth of others’. You will often find that a man who is compelled to measure his substance against the substance of another, has little of substance in the first place!
