Washington creates 'Cuba transition' post
The American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has created a new post, which she says will help accelerate the demise of Fidel Castro's government in Cuba.

She appointed a Republican Party activist, Caleb McCarry, to a State Department job described as Cuba transition coordinator.

Secretary of State Rice said: "For nearly 50 years the regime of Fidel Castro has condemned the people of Cuba to a tragic fate of repression and poverty...To direct our government's actions in support of a free Cuba, I'm appointing Caleb McCarry to serve as our Cuba transition coordinator."

The post of transition coordinator is the fruit of a recent US government report, which outlined the steps that Washington was prepared to take to bring about change in Cuba.

Known as the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, the operation will have a war chest of nearly $60 million.

One of its main aims will be to subvert the planned succession under which power is due to pass from Fidel Castro to his younger brother, Raul.

Mr McCarry, who has served for eight years on the House International Relations Committee's Republican staff, will oversee the action plan to speed up the end of what Condoleezza Rice called "Castro's tyranny" on the island.

Mr McCarry said: "The report of the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba is...a comprehensive statement of what the United States is prepared to do to help the Cuban people secure the liberty and prosperity that are their right."

The BBC Americas editor said this latest move is likely to play well with the influential Cuban exile community in the United States. Many prominent Cuban Americans were invited to the ceremony to announce Mr McCarry's appointment.

I love Castro because he is clever he outsmart dumb ass American government by releasing all of his prisoners and allowing them to flee to the USA and now they are hustlers in Florida thanks to the American system of seeing communism as evil and undesirable. Too bad Castro didn’t tell the Americans that he was releasing all of his criminals; and I bet he was laughing all the way to the bank because he doesn’t have to keep them in confinement but let them settle in
