Coltrane

How did you know so quickly?

What are you not telling us?

Blackmatta
If it were as you say, then how come his career when nosedown afterwards? That is not very pragmatic. I think he actually meant what he said when he resigned.

Blackmatta

You mean he was being pragmatic for Britain itself in terms of expense and hassle of the thing as well as his own career in case of Blairs collapse?

Hmmm

I do not know. I can only go on what he said (which for politicians is not very reliable Im sure) and that was soley on the moral principles of going to war and the illegality of doing so.
confused3I have no specific recollection of him as a bad foreign secretary... he seemed ok to me. What impression do you have of him?

With that BM, I must reassess my opinion. You have opened my eye. I can't blame him for the arming of Iraq (we had a Tory gov during that period) but the Indonesia thing shows he is of the same mould and probably would have done so in that position. It was a poor thing to do on its own anyway.

The part about him shifting to the right and then switching back to the left suggest a cynical man as opposed to a moral one. The part about "tipped to return" with Brown shows the Pragmatism I suppose you meant in your first post.

Good find.

His razor sharp wit in parliament and in television debates was on a par with Denis Healey's and John Smith's. He was a heavyweight intellectual and a real champ.
I was very much hoping (and expecting) he would be playing a major role in a Brown government, despite their disagreements. He was one of the few politicians in today's Labour party who was willing to sacrifice a few votes for something he believed in.
He was someone who was there in the background who gave Labour and the country some hope. That hope has now noticably diminished and who knows maybe Mo Mowlan would be next while Galloway is still far away

He will be remembered for two things; resigning over Iraq and dumping his wife at Heathrow Airport.

True, but you know where the tabloids are gonna go. Perhaps they'll give it a few days, butthey'll start churning it all out again.
