Women in Northampton have been warned not to go out alone after dark following the attacks

Women in Northampton havebeen warnednot to go out alone after dark followingthe attacks, which happenedover the past10 days.

The five victimswere approachedwhile out alone in the early hours of the morning.

Three were raped but two -includinga 15-year-old -managed to flee the men, who are thought to work in unison to abduct their victims.

Policesaidtheyhad a "good response" to media appeals to trace the main suspects - said to be three or more black men with southern African accents.

"We are very pleased with the response to the media appeals and have now received a number of very positive leads to work on," said Detective Chief Inspector John Jones, who is leading the hunt.

But Mr Jones also appealed to women in the town to be alert and take all reasonable steps to keep themselves safe.

"We do not want to make areas no go areas and we do not want to stop females going out and enjoying themselves.

"But obviously following these recent incidents we need them to be even more vigilant and to exercise common sense about where they go and how they get there."

Uniformed officers will be out in force in the town centre over the coming days to reassure the public that it is still safe to go out in the town.

CCTV footage is being checked while police are also stopping and searching cars and men matching the descriptions given by the victims.

The attackers are described as tall, black men with South African accents who were driving a blue BMW car and a light-coloured Fiat Punto for some of the attacks.

Mr Jones said officers were still keeping an "open mind" on whether all five incidents were linked.

I am sorry but when it comes to rape and other hideous crimes then i have no loyality to colour, I hope they catch those cowards , lock them in prison and throw the keys away.

It seems that they have arrested a couple of men for this crime. Lets hope there the right ones

" ... Snr Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector John Jones, from the Northamptonshire Police Homicide and Major Crime team, said, "Our investigations have led us to believe that there was a group of men cruising around Northampton in vehicles in the early hours of August 1, but we have found no evidence that any offences were committed."

He said police would be taking "informal action" for wasting their time against a 15-year-old girl who claimed that the gang had tried to abduct her. They have asked prosecutors to consider possible charges on the same offence against an 18-year-old girl who claimed she had been abducted and raped by the gang ...

When the story broke in August that a gang of men was abducting and raping young women in Northampton, some British media gave prominence to claims by the alleged victims that the alleged rapists had South African accents.

The Times of London wrote on August 12 that the women were "abducted and raped in a tactic familiar in South Africa".

This marked "the arrival in Britain of a notorious South African violent crime known as 'jack rolling', where gangs of youths in cars blocked off streets and raped every woman caught in their net".

"... On Wednesday detectives said they had had "very positive " leads from media appeals to trace their main suspects - three or more black men with South African accents.

"We are very pleased with the response to the media appeals and have now received a number of very positive leads to work on," said Det Chief Insp John Jones, who is leading the hunt ..."
