If could provide links as to how this Sudan crisis came about, feel free to do it. Thanks

But anyway,

Me and my father was talking about Sudan and the crisis that was going on over there and well we both disagreed (or at least he was telling me I was making too many excuses) on how the crisis came about in Sudan. Well on my take is that a lot of it has to do with confused/corrupt Sudanese who believe they are "Arabs"and I think the invasion of Arabs influenced Sudan and corrupt the nation, I think all that is tied into why many are suffering in Sudan, but my dad says I'm making excuses for Sudanese oppressed people as to why they are suffering. My dad side is that they the women don't know how to control themselves and that they are having too many children. I thought that was trivial and ignorant to the bigger picture as to why Sudan is in the position they are in now. Either I'm making excuses for these people or my dad needs to read more on Sudan than just watching whitewashed CNN news everyday about Sudan because they don't tell you the whole story. But he insist on telling me I'm wrong and that I'm making excuseses. So can anybody elaborate on how all this Sudanese Crisis started?

good question bbc.

i think theres element of truth in what both of you are saying.

one thing is that people are continuing to confuse ''ethnicity'' and ''race''.

lots of people speak ''arabic'' but are not racially ''arab''.

just as not everyone who speaks ''english'' is not ''english''.

if you go to the US or the caribbean and see black people speaking english it does not mean that they are trying to be ''white'' does it?

i think Sudan is a tyoical post colonial construct struggling to bring together its disparate tribes into one National Identity.

having said that it does seem that there are issues for some Sudanese about their Black Identity.

Wow, I hate to sound like an asshole, but well, the conflict in Sudan has nothing to do with Arabs "corrupting" the country, and even little to do with uncontrollable women, so I'm sorry that I won't indulge the prejudice and sexism.

However, (all snark aside) I can tell you what the origins of the conflict are. First, the area of incident is the Darfur region of Sudan, which consists of: Shamal Darfur (bordering Libya), Gharb Darfur and Janub Darfur which border Chad.

The conflict is between the government supported Janjaweed, which is a collection of Arab militias, against the non-Arab militias and people of the region. Note, the majority of people on both sides are black. There are such things as Arab blacks and non-Arab blacks. This distinction between "non-Arab" and "Arab" is overblown in Western media and disputed by the Sudanese government itself.

Back to the story though.

Now, Sudan gained independence in 1956 and since then, the government has had a strongly "Arab" character. When the government imposed Islamic law in the south, a civil war broke out which lasted between 1983 and a ceasefire was signed in 2003. A provision of this agreement was that the government would share the oil-revenues (equally) with the non-Arab blacks. However, the agreement did not satisfy leaders from the Darfur region, and two organizations (militas) were created in order to get more favorable treatment.

The organizations are the Justice and Equality Movement, and the Sudanese Liberation Army. In early 2003, JEM and SLA rebels attacked a government facility. The government was caught off guard, and did not have much in the way of troop strength to retaliate. So, the government gathered and recruited Arab militas, armed them and let them at it. These militas are collectively called the Janjaweed. Now while this conflict is primarily political, it did gain an ethnic dimension, as the Janjaweed targeted non-Arab blacks. However, both sides have slaughtered and maimed civillians and as a result, there are millions of refugees and deaths.

And that is the Darfur conflict in a nutshell.

I don't mean to be a smartass(I'm not in a good mood today so sorry :P), but don't you think that if I knew that already, I wouldn't have done this post in the first place? I'm pretty sure there are a million post about this, but I made this post so my question can be directly answered. So, if you got a problem with it, ignore it.
