- Albertans, at 42 per cent, were most apt to consider independence, followed by Saskatchewan at 31.9 per cent. Residents of B.C. and Manitoba were the least likely to consider separation, at 30.8 and 27.5 per cent respectively.
42% of Albertans are now considering independence? Will Canada need to do something, such as devolve some powers to the provinces, to alleviate western alienation?

Good riddance! Let that arrogant jealous province go. Alberta and Quebec both whine, Alberta as much as Quebec but still. Whine, whine, whine! All they ever do. See how long they last on their own before being swallowed up by a certain someone. Probably what they want. Whatever. I say let them all go andspare us the drama.

With the finding of Oil Sand, Alberta will be very wealthy, and independant of the easter and maritime provinces. I think this more than anything is the motivation.

Probably, but it is nothing new. I heard the other day that because of the high gas prices that they had a 7 billion dollar surplus or something like that. But anyway, Albertans have by and large always been jealous of Ontario and Quebec. They feel that they have never gotten as much attention, which is true in a sense...forgotten because they're out west. But they along with Quebec are among the biggest whiners. Ridiculously annoying. Will be nice to have some peace.

I don't think its jealously so much as contempt at what they see as eastern "liberalism".

I'm sure that's a factor as well. But considering that Albertansare by and large supporters of the Conservative Party it is understandablewhy they would wanttheir people to be in power in Ottawa instead of the Liberals so often voted into power by the 401 corridor (i.e. Southern Ontario) and Quebec. The PC never should have united with the Canadian Alliance (too conservative and western for someTorontonians & GTAers). Many Ontarians see the Conservative Party as the Alliance in PC clothing. Not to mention the fact that people remember former Ontario Premier Mike Harris and Ex-PM BrianMulroney. No love lost there. I also think they'd have a better chance if that Harper dude fell off the face of the earth...I don't trust the man at all. I think Martin is the lesser of the two evils. But none of three parties interest me with their current leaders at the helm.
Regionalism in Canada causes endless problems for the Confederation...at the end of the day it sounds just like childish bickering. That's the problem with a country as large as Canada with no true unifying factor. Leads to thoughts of separation, that probably will never happen. Quebec on the other hand is another case in and of itself. The only thing that satisfies me is that Quebec will be many many times smaller than it is today if they choose to separate. I wonder if that would apply to Alberta as well.

I don't know about Alberta.
It's right in the middle of the goddamn country so I don't know how some of them figure they could declare independance from a land they're surrounded by today.
If any Canadian province goes independant it'll be Quebec...and they ain't going no time soon.

If Alberta goes I think it will give B.C. andSaschatewan impetus to secede form the Confederacy.

Not gonna happen. It's just that people over there most of themare hardline conservatives, are fed with up the Liberals and the new Same-sex marriage bill being passed. Naturally this upsets them, as their own views of the matter is cast aside. But this feeling is propably just temporary and will wear off.
Shit, Quebec has been on about separatism for decades and still nothing happens.
