National geographic new cover “AFRICA: Whatever you though, think again. Inside page after page after page after page of a new European perspective on African people. A new and refreshing reissue of the same old racism, dusted of re-voiced and repackaged. Africa again is written about In the same vein as the study the lowland mountains Gorilla (an illiterate animal). The “White voice on Africa again rings without apology, with supreme arrogance; views that are made fact without challenge. The parent to the Africa child reels off page after page on the African condition as they inherently have a better vantage point of African culture and the African dilemma than any African possible could. In this mindset Europeans become the sole authority on African affairs, choosing once again to dabble in African history. Maybe they have forgotten the legacy of their dabbling. An in this dabbling is the blind arrogances which stands and cannot be challenged, the one way moral mirror, the self-appointed saviors of the world whom venture down to Africa and within 2 sec have figured it all out.
How is it in the era of affirmative action, race equality can National Geographic magazine do an entire magazine on Africa and at no stage feel the need or sensible desire to use more than 1African writers and no African photographers? How is this action justified? Are they no African writers who could offer a naturally more authentic view on the African condition? Don’t African people understand how to use a camera and photograph their own experiences?
Within the actual magazine there is the reissue of the old racist Eurocentric views repackaged and reinforced with a few insightful complements to balance the negativity. Again we see unfounded statements by in the first few lines of reading that AIDS came from African people as well as all the other major diseases. Reading on we find that Africa is a backward place due to geographic restrictions, the inability of Africans to domesticate the native plants and animals. What is different here is the same nonsense is spun by saying “but it was there fault for being backward, this subtle implies that the possibility or theory of Africa inferiority is a valid assumption to the apparent “backwardness of Africa.
