New lawyer...

In early September, Elendureports.com reported that one of President Obasanjo's sons acquired a property in New York earlier this year. The New York apartment cost a little more than half a million dollars. Soon after our report, Gbenga Obasanjo, the President's first son told some reporters that he was not the owner of the said property in New York. He pointed reporters in the direction of his younger half-brother, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo.

Late last week, John Abebe, brother of Stella Obasanjo, Nigeria's First Lady, confirmed that Olumuyiwa, another son of the President, is the real owner of the property in question. In an apparent coordinated effort at damage control between the Presidency and the Abebe family to douse any controversy such information will create, Abebe told journalists that Olumuyiwa paid for the property with a mortgage loan from a bank. Abebe claims that Olumuyiwa got a mortgage based on his salary of over two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000.00) as an attorney. He also told Daily Independent, a Nigerian newspaper, that Olumuyiwa was called to the Bars of New York and New Jersey states earlier this year. This claim is not true.

Buy America: Olu Obasanjo, Felicia Wabara and Orji Kalu and the anti-corruption

Potomac Mansions: Kalu and Atiku are Neighbours [/align]
[align=justify]
Nigerians love real estate. The acquisition penchant of Nigerians is unmatched. Even in this era of so-called 'economic hardships,' Nigerians continue to buy prime real estate. In the 1980's-1990's, South of France and other parts of Western Europe were veritable play grounds for unscrupulous Nigerian businessmen and politicians. Today, it is the United States of America. And the areas of choice are the Maryland cities that are shouting distances from Washington D.C. The other prime area is New York City and the surrounding suburbs of New Jersey.

[/align]
[align=justify]Atiku (left) and Kanu's Potomac Mansions

Two weeks ago, we broke the story of Vice President Atiku's multimillion dollar mansion in Potomac, Maryland. The Vice President made a feeble attempt at whitewashing the story by describing it as 'no big deal' since he has maintained a residence in the United States for over a decade. While there have been claims that Atiku was a very rich man before becoming the Vice President of Nigeria in 1999, he did not acquire the multimillion dollar Maryland mansion until one and a half years after he became Nigeria's number two citizen. But for the immunity he enjoys as the Vice President of Nigeria, he could have been prosecuted for committing a crime.

Although he enjoys the same immunity as Abubakar Atiku, Orji Uzor Kalu, the governor of Abia State was dragged before the code of conduct bureau for maintaining foreign bank accounts. The governor is fighting the charges in a different court. However, Elendureports.com investigations show that Orji Kalu also acquired a multimillion dollar property on June 26, 2003, barely one month after being sworn-in for his second term as governor of Abia State. Kalu is known as a rich young man who became a millionaire in his twenties. The two storey house was built in 1996 on 5.00 acres. Kalu paid one million and seven hundred thousand dollars for this property.

It is speculated that Kalu was a front for some powerful individuals who were in positions of influence and authority in the 80's and 90's. Sen. Jubril Aminu, who was Kalu's vice chancellor at the University Maidugiri where Kalu had his undergraduate studies in the 80's is part of this group. The list also includes Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria's military president for eight years. Kalu, who is running for president told Elendureports.com in an exclusive interview a few months ago, that Pres. Obasanjo would not hesitate to disgrace him if there were any evidence of corruption against him.

Potomac, Maryland is a small city. It has a population of about forty-five thousand. Seventy-five per cent of Potomac residents are white while blacks make up only four per cent of the population. The city's unemployment rate is about two per cent, three points lower than the US average. The median yearly income in Potomac is about one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. The city is the twelfth most expensive zip code in the United States.

Disgraced former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara is not left out in the US property mania. Through wife, Felicia, Wabara acquired a piece of Queens, New York for the handsome price of nine hundred and ninety-five thousand dollars. The house was purchased on March 11, 2005, while the documents were filed with the city on April 1, 2005. Felicia Wabara was sighted at the hotel around this time. Elendureports.com is yet to confirm if the white man she was seen with one evening in March is the real estate agent. Ms. Wabara spent hours with this gentleman and at some point she kicked off her shoes and stretched out her legs. Her husband, Adolpus and some other Nigerian senators were busy somewhere else at Four Seasons hotel in Manhattan on the night Felicia was sighted. Alliance for Democracy senator, Tokunbo Afikuyomi was part of the group of senators that were guests at the Four Seasons hotel on that day.

Olu Obasanjo G. is another famous Nigerian name that acquired a piece of New York real estate. On March 1, 2005, Olu Obasanjo bought a Brooklyn, New York property for five hundred and thirty-seven thousand, one hundred and twenty-six dollars. At about 1:00 PM on April 1, 2005, his agents filed papers with the city. We have been trying for two weeks to confirm the identity of Olu Obasanjo G. A source told us that Olu Obasanjo G is one of Pres. Obasanjo's sons. The source further stated that the President's son is a former law student who lived with Andrew Young, the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations and the Chairman of Goodworks Int. LLC., a firm which lobbies the United States government on behalf of Nigeria.

We made several attempts to get in touch with Gov. Orji Uzor Kalu for this story. Gloria, a staffer at the Government House, Umuahia, told Elendureports.com that Kalu had travelled to Abuja. Calls to the governor's cell phone were not answered. Attempts by this magazine to get to Wabara were not successful before press time.

"The Reason Why Africa Can't Get Ahead"

One of the reasons but by no means the only reason.

Internal affairs=main reason for Africa's lack of sucess in 2005 AD

How corruption holds back Africa's oil industry

Moyiga Nduru | Johannesburg, South Africa

03 October 2005 11:59

ad_script('MGnIns','dmg','MGnIns.Nat','10','220x24 0');

Corruption is costing Africa's oil industry billions of dollars annually, says Peter Eigen, founder and chairperson of Transparency International (TI) -- a non-governmental group based in Berlin that monitors and fights graft.

He made the comment to journalists on Friday at a gathering organised by TI South Africa in Johannesburg. Eigen was in the country to attend the 18th World Petroleum Congress, a five-day meeting held in Johannesburg that attracted more than 4000 delegates.

Oil-rich Angola, Chad, Libya, Nigeria and Sudan all fared poorly on TI's corruption perceptions index for last year. This annual rating ranks various states according on the extent to which graft is viewed as having taken hold there.

In these countries, public contracting in the oil sector is plagued by revenues vanishing into the pockets of local officials, middlemen and foreign oil executives, says TI.

"The sector is rife with corruption, non-transparency and maladministration, especially in countries in transition and post-war economies," the group noted in a statement issued this week.

Added Eigen: "Oil-producing countries are some of the most corrupt and most miserable in the world."

Equatorial Guinea 'should be the richest'
He singled out Equatorial Guinea, which began exporting oil in 1991, for particular criticism.

"Equatorial Guinea, with a population of about 521000, should be the richest, with everybody driving a Mercedes," noted Eigen.

But officials in this West African country -- with oil reserves estimated at 1,28-billion barrels -- are corrupt, he said.

Similar allegations of graft plague Nigeria, where late dictator Sani Abacha is reported to have stolen $2,2-billion between 1993 and 1998. Some of this money was banked in Switzerland, which has returned $290-million of the looted funds to Nigeria. Another $168-million is expected to be transferred in the coming months.

Swiss authorities had wanted the World Bank to monitor the repatriated funds, to ensure that they did not get siphoned off yet again by corrupt officials -- even suggesting that the money should go directly to education, health and infrastructure projects.

While the bank declined to do this, it is clear that oil money has not trickled down to the ordinary citizens of Nigeria. As Eigen pointed out, the Ogoni people in the Niger delta, where the bulk of Nigeria's oil is produced, live in abject poverty.

To combat corruption, Nigeria plans to open its oil industry to greater scrutiny. The country's Petroleum and Energy Minister, Edmund Doukoru, told the World Petroleum Congress that his country will make oil-related information available to the public.

Protests in Sudan
In Sudan, parallels are emerging between the country's Nuers, who inhabit the vast oil fields in the south, and the Ogoni. Calls have been made for Nuer officials to resign from the government of national unity that has been set up to rule Sudan, to protest the fact that they have not been given any ministerial posts.

"It's an undisputed fact that 80% of Sudanese oil is located in Nuerland. The marginalisation of the Nuer is a deliberate act to preclude the Nuer politicians from participating in decisions that are connected to oil wealth-sharing," said the Union of Nuer Community in North America in a statement on September 24.

"Kiir and Bashir are now bent [on treating] the Nuer like the Ogoni of Nigeria, whose oil is looted while they live in extreme poverty," the statement added, in reference to Deputy President Salva Kiir (formerly a rebel leader) and President Omar al Bashir.

Sudan's government, which signed a peace deal with southern rebels in January, has taken control of the all-important ministries of energy and finance.

Secrecy in Angola
As with Nigeria, Angola's oil revenues are also shrouded in secrecy.

"The government could do anything with the money: buy arms, hire mercenaries or steal it," Eigen said.

However, Francisco da Cruz of the British Petroleum company told the Johannesburg gathering that change is afoot in Angola.

"In the past, the government had not been transparent because of security reasons. But since last year, the Budget is slowly becoming transparent. We think this is a very good thing," he said.

Cruz, who is Angolan, called for greater tact in the fight against corruption among African officials.

"The best thing is to influence them by having a positive discussion in a controlled environment ... Confrontation doesn't help," he noted.

"There are people in government in Africa who are willing to change. The new generation of African leaders wants things to change," Cruz added. "For the old guards who are opposed to change, nature will take care of them. Some of them cannot even attend office work from nine to five in the evening." -- IPS

If you're suggesting that the only "Reason Why Africa Can't Get Ahead" is what you have posted then you are surely taking part in "nonsensical white boy rhetoric".
Look around:

Standard of living is a stupid Euro-economic concept. It is basically a measure of cash flow.

Code:
standard of living
Definition

The financial health of a population, as measured by the quantity of consumption by the members of that population. The measure most frequently used to estimate standard of living is gross national income per capita. One drawback to the standard of living measurement is that it does not take into account some factors which are important but hard to quantify, such as crime rate or environmental impact.
Suppose you have two individuals with incomes of $100,000 per year. That simple definition says they have the same standard of living. But, suppose one individual lives in a $300,000 house which is payed for and the other individual is paying rent on a furnished apartment in a nice neighborhood. The man that owns the house has to pay taxes every year but the other one has to pay rent every month. Who is spending more on housing? Who has more net worth?

How often do economists talk about the NET WORTH of the average citizen? Standard of living is bullsh!t.

If I said the two men making $100,000 each were White would that cause the concept of standard of living to make more sense?

Did you notice economists suddenly start talking about net worth in the United States?
