Two hunted over homophobic murder



Jody Dobrowski had been visiting a friend before he was killedTwo men are being hunted by police after a man was beaten to death in a homophobic attack on Clapham Common in south London.


Jody Dobrowski, a 24-year-old bar manager from south-east London, was found unconscious in the early hours of Saturday but died later in hospital.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Scola described the attack as abhorrent.
He appealed to the gay community to help catch the killer and asked anyone attacked on the common to come forward.


'Homophobic insults'
Speaking from Clapham Common on Sunday afternoon, DCI Scola said: "He was the victim of a sustained and violent assault.
"There were other people in the area at the time of the attack and homophobic insults were heard. For that reason I am convinced it was a homophobic attack."

Certainly those who carried out the attack thought he was gay

He said it was not known whether Mr Dobrowski was gay but officers were looking closely at his lifestyle and background.
"Certainly those who carried out the attack thought he was gay," he said.
He added that he particularly wants to trace Mr Dobrowski's movements between 2215 BST, when he left a friend's house near the common, and just after midnight when the police found him lying unconscious.
A post-mortem examination on Sunday showed the cause of death was severe head, neck and facial injuries.


'Others at risk'
The first suspect is described as white, between 20 and 30, 6ft tall, with shaved hair, while the second man is also white, about the same age, but said to be shorter and stockier.


Bob Hodgson, from the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender advisory group, said: "The main focus at this time is to catch the people that murdered this young man.


"This is a time for people from the community to come forward if they know anything at all.
"If you don't come forward with what you know you could potentially be putting other people at risk in the future."


Borough Commander Jo Royle, from Wandsworth police, said: "I know the concerns and worry this attack will have. We need you to help us.
"You may also have vital information that can assist us capture the people that committed this murder."

To be honest,no.

Whenever I hear of crimes like this Black males almost never come to mind.

Unlike other myriad crimes where your internal dialogue is like"Oh pleeezzz baby Jesus dont let he/she be black".

Isn't it interesting that we've had a concerted campaign by Peter Tatchell and his mob to BAN homophobic ragga lyrics..and yet its funny how those who are NOT consumers of this music went out and killed a young man they thought was gay... maybe OUTRAGE ought to pay more attention to their own people and the music they listened to before jumping on our backs...

I wonder if OUTRAGE, will be equally as outraged at the white on white crime perpetrated here?

Cashmoney: Actually can we get this correct I never supportive of the OUTRAGE persecution of only Reggae artist.... What i said was that I do not agree with homophobic lyric as part of a wider issue of promoting slackness within ragga music...I said that we cannot talk about racism and not understand the contradiction of calling for the death of others based on their sexuality....saying that is NOT the same as saying that I support or agree with OUTRAGE...

There was a homophobic attack a while ago near the River Thames and I remember straight away there was an inference that the suspects were black. This time the suspects appear to be white, but there doesn't seem to be the same coverage impact.

Tatchell clearly has his own sinister motives which should not for one minute be suggested as being honourable. Where is he now? Where is his statement? Where is his appeal for Londoners to assist the gay community?

He will do whatever serves his sinister agenda. And appealing for assistance to find two Caucasian homophobic murderers does not assist his larger gameplan.

Two men have been jailed for life at the Old Bailey for the homophobic murder of gay barman Jody Dobrowski.
Unemployed Thomas Pickford, 26, and decorator Scott Walker, 33, admitted the killing at an earlier hearing.
Mr Dobrowski was walking across Clapham Common, south London, when he was beaten to death on 14 October 2005.
Prosecutors said Pickford and Walker had a "pre-meditated plan to attack a gay man". They were told they would serve a minimum of 28 years in prison.
Judge Brian Barker said the pair had only one intention when they went to the common - "homophobic thuggery".
Severely beaten
"It was Jody's tragic misfortune to cross your path. You subjected him to mindless abuse and showed him no mercy.
"In those few seconds you took from him the most precious possessions - his life and future."
Mr Dobrowski, an assistant manager at Bar Risa Jongleurs, in Camden, north London, was on his way home from a friend's house when he was attacked at about midnight.

Killing is 'tip of the iceberg'

He was found unconscious but died later in hospital from head, neck and facial injuries.
He was beaten so severely his own family did not recognise him and he had to be identified by his fingerprints.
In a statement, his family thanked the police, medical staff, victim support groups, witnesses, the judge and prosecution team and all those who had ensured "justice was served".
"In a free and democratic society, Jody's murder was an outrage," they said.
"Jody was not the first man to be killed, or terrorised, or beaten, or humiliated for being homosexual - or for being perceived to be homosexual.
"Tragically, he will not be the last man to suffer the consequences of homophobia which is endemic in this society.

"This is unacceptable. We cannot accept this. No intelligent, healthy or reasonable society could."






Walker and Pickford showed Jody Dobrowski "no mercy"
Gay human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said gay and lesbian people want to be able to live without the fear of homophobic abuse and attack.
"Sadly that isn't always possible," he told the BBC News website.
Both Walker and Pickford had been involved in an assault on another gay man in the area two weeks earlier, the court heard.
Walker had been out on licence for assaulting and threatening to kill his own mother and had met Pickford at a charity-run hostel for ex-offenders.
Walker's licence had expired the day before the murder, but he was still under licence at the time of the earlier assault.
After sentencing, police released details of the attack. Walker and Pickford crossed Mr Dobrowski's path on their return after a night of drinking.
"Following a brief exchange of words, Pickford threw punches at Mr Dobrowski," read the police statement. "Walker joined in the assault enthusiastically."
'Swollen pulp'
One witness who tried to intervene was warned off and told by one of the pair: "We don't like poofters here and that's why we can kill him if we want".
Officers arriving at the scene described Mr Dobrowski's face as "a bloody swollen pulp".
Mr Dobrowski, who was originally from Stroud in Gloucestershire, was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, where tests revealed he had a swollen brain, a broken nose and extensive bruising to his neck and spine as well as to his groin.
He was so badly injured that a pathologist was unable to say how many times he had been hit but identified 33 areas of injury to his head, face, ears and neck.

Also, why do I get the feeling those two men got sentenced to a minimum of 28 years prison (not that a murder isn't deserving of a long sentence) only because the man was gay? Had they murdered a heterosexual,or an African (think Anthony Walker)etc etc the sentence wouldn't have been a minumum of 28 years it would have been a lot shorter.

At any ratethat's two less crackers for me to worry about lol.

Although I totally condemn this murder as a grown man can have sex with who the hell he wants behind closed doors and nobody has the right to tell him he cannot do this, at the same time I am wondering what went through Peter Tatchells mind when he realised that it was 2 white men and not black kids influenced by dancehall music that killed these men? Bet he was gutted and it made him look silly in front of white gay men who he had misinformed by telling them that their enemey was the black man. Honestly how many black men do you know of that can even be bothered to beat-up a gay men? Gay-bashing (or beating up any minoruity for the 'crime' of just being a minority) is by far mainly a white people thing, don't pin it on us Tatchell!
