Morons...why haven't they taken this stand against POVERTY, the pilaging of Nigerian oil by Shell and the West, the neglect of Igbo land etc???
Idiots have no balls to be real men and tackle the REAL issues thats affecting Africans and turning Nigeria backward every damn year! Up to 1993, one could feed a whole family of five with FIVE Nira.....now you need thousands of those useless papers to even buy petrol, in the land ofoil plenty!
This gay issue has become the scapegoat for everything thats moraly wrong with the world.....its amazing that they can pick on homosexuality allegedly brought to Africans by whites, yet they cannot condenm the poverty and the neo colonialism thats robbing Africans of every dignity we have left.
And to top it all, they all would lick the white men's feet.....if thats not more immoral than their disgust at homosexuality, then i don't know what is.
Brainwashed sissy boys...:P:P

I back Mezmerized 120%! Seriously there are 101+ things to worry more about than gay marriage at the moment. Why are they wasting their time banning it whenI'm sure it wasn't even legal in the first place and even if it was legal, I very much doubt that gay men there would have the guts to go through with it! I saw a programme last year that showed that the oil companies are pracitically bleeding the country dry and nobody is stopping them. Every country plays this scapegoatcard. When there are economic problems, the governement focuses some type ofblame on the minority becausethey know the average Joe won't understand that it's the government screwing them over not the minority.

What gets me is that many have died (been killed) in order to uphold the interest of the 'European Multi-Nationals' at the expense of the African's interest.......and taking a stand on that highly immoral issue, ranks below this!
Iwonder if homosexuals hadthe financial muscle to 'influence' the law makers in the same why the Multi-Nationals are able to,I wonder whether this announcement wouldhave been made.
Geeze, it's not as if we as a peoplehaven't got more pressing business to attend to!
Respect
There are those who feel that the only way to ‘prove their own worth’ is by ‘devaluing the worth of others’. You will often find that a man who is compelled to measure his substance against the substance of another, has little of substance in the first place!

What makes me laugh is Africans in the continent indulging in the Anglican church. How anglo do they want to be. Why do Nigerians still follow an Anglo based version of Christianity. And even dress like they are from Canterbury.
But using the argument of "havent they got something better to do" is weak in my eyes. Using that yardstick then they shouldnt spend any time on passing laws that dont deal with the specific threat of European domination. Seems to me that they are fighting cultural domination within the confines of a foreign hand me down religion.
Why shouldnt they? I say good luck to em.

wow
I thought the article was about the outlaw of same sex unions in Nigeria....how did it become a debate on "multi-nationalism"???
Thank God Nigeria doesn't have to get permission from "Africans in Europe"in order toenact lawsthat are in keeping with its traditional values.
Typical diasporan, myopic vision.

Anyways, my point is not moving away from the article in question, i am just stating that its amazing that these HOLLY men can UNITE to condemn homosexuality(by the way, homosexuality is NOT even a big issue in majority of African countries including Nigeria....they are soo invisible that for the years i lived both in Congo and Nigeria i didn't even know what gay meant) when they cannot unite and condemn Obasanjo, the pilaging of Oil, the neglect of the environment which is killing Nigerians and the bad economy thats none existent unless you do "deals" with the big guys.

Honestly, can we just be more realistic about our priorities rather than being proud in some silly gestures that only serves as a distraction from the REAL issues? How come those HOLLY men are not uniting to get the Oil money to work for the people? They are religious zealous idiots who don't care much about upholding anything else but religious etiquetes.....and i am surprised that you are not seeing this for what it is....more marginalisation where its not necesary.

@ Mez - your point is clear but you too are distracting from theissue at hand in Coltrane's article. Are you telling me that the only issue that is relevant in Nigeria today is thedistribution of its oil money?

Look, corruption is corruption...even here you dont get things done unless you deal with the "big boys" - I think it is euphemistically called "lobbying"... So Nigeria is no better or worse than the West in that regards.

I think that your brash condemnation of Nigeria (albeit I do have some of the concerns that you expressed)at her attempts to formalise what most Nigerians understand as law, is short-sighted.

Homosexuality is raising its head in Nigeria and it is against everything that Nigerian people hold dear. It is indeed, as quoted in the article "anti-African" In addition, like it or not, the Anglican church does have a strong foothold in that country and with the lax rules of the Western Anglican Churches with regards to the admission of gay priests etc...I think it is absolutely appropriate for Nigeria to ban same sex unions.

Yes, it is probably a more symbolic gesture because Traditional Laws and Sharia Law takes care of most homosexual acts. But nonethless, it is a declaration to the world that Nigeria will not follow the political correctness of the rest of the world by pretending that there is nothing socially or politcally wrong with homosexuality.
