Sorry....But I think the teacher has a valid point.... and there is a serious case of double standards operating here within our community.. I'm sorry but I'm also not buying hurt pride bit from the student either..because no one is telling me he has not heard the N word used by classmates or friends...

While I will agree that the double standard that a African/Black can say ni**a/ni**er while Whites can't is utter BS, i don't think Whites should be free to call Africans/Blacks the N-word simply because some ignorant Blacks say it. If they want to use it, then say it when you are talking to other Blacks that they knowuse it. I know that I would be ready to take a White guy's (and often even a Black guy's) head off for calling me that.

I think it comes down to whether or not the boy used it either in front of the teacher or in reference of the teacher. If he did use it, then the teacher is not wrong. However, if the boy didn't, then I would say that the teacher certainly disrespected him.

You see Thoth..I can't agree there either this word is wrong or its not..if its wrong then Its a bit much to attack the teacher..when you can hear that same word on any music station on a daily basis...that is a contradiction..

The word is wrong...but so are many other profane or expletive words. You don't use the words unless it is acceptable by your present company. I don't think you will be at work saying "muthaf--ka this" and "muthaf--ka that" at the work place, but you might do it with certain friends of yours in your home. I find it to be the same thing, although I don't use the N-word at all due to cultural awareness.

After saying this, I guess the teacherwas mostly wrong for using it in a public school. I honestly would not be able to condone him for saying it if he has Black/African acquaintances that use it with him.

How is it a contradiction?

What does having the word sprayed all over a radio station have to do with an individual in a classroom? If the person in question was responsible for said radio station, then I agree. You can't make someone responsible for something they have no control over.

Kunjufu
People use the F word and the B word all over TV too. Does that mean the teacher can start using those words too? Fact is teacher WANTED to say that word. I had no idea how much whites LOVE that word till recently. They can't WAIT to say it.

the word shouldn't be used by any one. that'll fix the double standards. the teacher should have called them what she would call her kids.

so are some of you saying that if the child uses the word then its okay for the teacher?

Who's the adult and whos the child? Who is there to set an appropriate example? I called him a wanker because he called me a wanker! Doesn't make sense the word is unacceptableconfused3

So if children go around swearing to each other is it okay. No its not. If you heard the N word used by students its not the same as it being used by a teacher. A friend could call me a idiot but I would take it a whole lot more personally if my teacher called me an idiot.

So now teachers are coming down to levels of the children. Please!

Who do you thinkis at fault here judging from the

In one instance, I think that these things can only be expected as long as we walk around calling each other the N-word. However, according to the student, the teacher called him the N-word without being provoked to do so. Is this teacher racist, or simply trying to connect with the African-American student body? Looking at the teacher's statement, he seems stupified at how we use the word so casually, but becomes an insult when others use it.

What do you think?

Ihear what u saying @SeT

I would expect that from ignorant youths not someone of his age and profession.

But as an "english" teacher his explanation for using it is totally bollocks, reminds of the dumb film Black and White...

Also would he be inclined to use words such as mother****er and all abusive words and such because the kids use it amongst themselves and he's tryign to reach out.
