Live webchat with Nick Broomfield

About His Big White Self
For more than 20 years Nick Broomfield has been getting into trouble with his documentary subjects - and making scintillating films in the process. The scourge of Maggie Thatcher, Courtney Love and Suge Knight (whom Broomfield alleged killed the rapper Tupac Shakur) has become a hero to a generation of filmmakers, including Michael Moore, Louis Theroux, Jon Ronson, Morgan Spurlock and Martin Bashir.
This tremendous success has had its drawbacks too. One of Broomfield's most effective films The Leader, The Driver And The Driver's Wife made during the final days of Apartheid in 1991 so outraged the South African white supremacist Eugene Terreblanche and his followers that Broomfield received death threats and was told that a bomb would be planted in his flat.
"I never thought in my worst nightmares that 14 years later I'd feel compelled to track down His Big White Self." But of course, he did, and this new film about the old devil is yet another unmissable piece of filmmaking.
What is most important to the history of the world? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Muslims or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of the cold war?" Zbigniew Kazimierz Brzezinski: United States National Secu

The watched the programme, some of the scences we're quite moving but those were scense from back in the day which i had seen in my younger days.
The 'man' is trash, I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire, my mind was boggling, white people are so flipping evil, look at all this in an AFRICAN country. Flipping parasites KMT

It's long past over for him and the group he was a part of (oops I forgot the name ). I wondered why this programme was so hyped up considering it is so out of date. Why now?? Typical Channel 4 though giving a prime time slot to this waste of space when any positive black programmes are put on at 10am. :X

I don't think its a waste of space to be honest... its quite good to remind people of the attrocities that has been done by white people in the past, I wouldn't call it trash at all, its infact more educational.

Personally,I would rather see more hype (and airplay) given to 'positive' black programmes than this 'let-us-remember-the-evil' stuff. What's the good of being reminded about the attrocities committed by whites anyway, when it does little to change the status quo and the continuation of more attrocities?

I don't see the educational value in this kind of stuff anywaywhen all it does istell black people 'what they already know', andtell white people 'what they don't want to know'.

Apartheid is alive and well:
"Apartheid in South Africa was officially declared dead 12 years ago but a growing number of critics say that far from being dead, apartheid is alive and well; it has simply gone underground. A series of horrifying cases involving white bosses seems to confirm that the old evil is lurking just under the surface. Statistics also show that while the ending of apartheid has brought an unprecedented economic boom to whites, blacks, with the exception of a few highly publicised individuals, have become poorer. Who are the real victors of the battle against apartheid? Is it whites or blacks? Tom Nevin reports.
A gruesome murder was a rude awakening for South Africans starting to believe that their country had turned the corner from black and white to the rainbow of racial harmony Nelson Mandela has longed for and so keenly sought.
The heavily racial undertone of the subsequent trial is disinterring racial tension generally hoped to have been rooted out in the first decade of the new South Africa. Now, it seems, it was simply lying in a shallow grave.
On trial are four whites and two black alleged henchmen accused of murdering three black laundry workers by beating them, tying them up, strangling them and shoving them into an industrial washing machine."

I can't understand wny people are surprised that this stuff is still going on. I expect it. There is no way that the attitudes of many whites in the country was going to change in a decade. Many of the racist police force are still relatively young, many people who supported apartheid are still alive and well. Just because Mandela got into power, doesn't mean that it was going to become a utopia overnight. It will take generations for any real difference to been seen and I and even my granchildren will be long dead before material wealth is evenly distributed in that country. Look at America, segregation was supposed to have ended in the 1960s and they still have one of the most racist and unequal socities in the world because many of the people who were in control back then are still in control, they just have to style it out a bit is all.
