Condoleezza + Watermelon = Trouble

Washington State - April 13th 2006 (Political Gateway) - A practice test at Bellevue Community College in Washington (state) triggered an uproar at the school. President of the college, Jean Floten, has apologized for institutional racism and is working to change the racial sensitivity at the college.

The teacher who made the test has not been identified. The test was a practice exam for a final.

The offending question?

25. Condoleeza holds a watermelon just over the edge of roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second. The height of the watermelon above the ground ‘t’ seconds later is given by formula h~ -16r[suP]2[/suP] + 20r + 300.

a. In how many seconds will it pass her on the way down (she is standing at the height of 300 feet).?
b. When will the watermeoln hit the ground?
c. How high did the watermelon get above ground?

It's a African American thing. Back then during slavery times and Jim Crow era, white folks would show blacks as a bunch of dumb idiots with dark black faces and otherracist images with us always eating watermelon. Because white folks mind they think that's what we eat, so they would always show us in a very racist way eating watermelon like a bunch of "coons".

BBC

I see what you mean with those images but that ain't stopping me from enjoying a food!

Kids math books are always like that. They were in my day. John has 6 oranges and Iqbal gives him 2 more blah blah blah. I don't see why they had to put Condelezza in and involve melons, after your lil link I can see why people would get upset but seriously... I can't imagine being upset by melons!

As Zagawa says though I do think it's the wrong battle to be fighting and yes people are definately shook to talk REAL issues. It's why people protest and make fuss over foolishness like nursery rhymes and black bags... sweating the small shit to take our minds off the big shit and trivialise racism. This makes all complaints of racism seem as petty and small as... well as a melon!

Bigger things for those people to get upset about than condelezzas alleged fruit throwing.
