An overt publicity stunt backfires on sportswear manufacturer, Puma as its new Clyde range of trainers is labelled ‘gay’ by young people.
The trainers feature a machine gun logo on the back and an inscription that states “I steal for a living. The 'limited' edition Bonny and Clyde inspired trainers from Puma seek to manipulate anti-gun crime campaigners into generating controversial publicity to give the product ‘street cred’.
Unfortunately for Puma the design was branded ‘gay’ not only by young people involved in sports but also those students who do not normally observe the latest fashion trends. One young student remarked “if I got those gay trainers as a christmas present I would ask my mum to find the receipt and get a refund.
This is not the first time a sportswear manufacture has used shock tactics to try and exploit young children. In 2005, Rebook attempted to use 50 Cent's anti-African gun promoting image to sell its new “I am what I am range. The Ligali organisation was amongst those responsible for bringing its TV and instore promotional campaign to an end.
Puma has defended their position by claiming their trainer design is a “mere work of art.
