A gang of Asians violently assaulted an African man in what was an ethnically motivated attack.
On Saturday 1 July 2006, an African man was walking on Bernard Street, London when he accidentally bumped into four Asian men who were on the pavement immediately outside a Tesco store. An altercation occurred between them and in order to escape from the gang, he ran across the road and entered Russell Square tube station. Three members from the gang followed him into the station and two of them stood in front of him to attract his attention.

Violent and racist assault
The two Asian men were attempting to provoke him into a fight when a third man, who was hiding a small glass bottle down by his leg, walked around the victim's right side and smashed the bottle over the right temple area of his head. The assault, which resulted in an eight inch gash and pouring blood along the side of his face, left him reeling as the gang members ran away. A few moments later they returned intent on causing more harm but were prevented by the ticket barriers that blocked their path. He was again subjected to a torrent of racist anti-African abuse as they threw stones and gravel at him and London Underground staff before finally leaving the scene.
