Second night of gunfire in city

Nov 15 2006

By Mark Cowan, Birmingham Mail

SHOTS were fired again in inner-city Birmingham last night, despite police flooding the streets with extra patrols following a fatal shooting and two stabbings.

A gunman opened fire at the door of a house in Wheeler Street, Newtown, at 9.45pm last night.

Two shots were discharged in the latest incident - little more than 24 hours after a 19-year-old man was shot dead and at least two people stabbed in separate incidents.

No-one was injured in the latest shooting but police were today trying to establish whether violence was part of tit-for-tat attacks or unconnected.

As uniformed patrols were stepped up to reassure the public, senior police officers were meeting with community leaders to discuss the events of the past two nights.

On Monday at 8pm, the 19-year-old man was shot in Melbourne Avenue, Newtown - the scene of another fatal shooting a year ago.

The victim, who was likely to be named today, is understood to have staggered across parkland before slumping in a pool of blood in Brookview Close. He died later in hospital.

Little more than than an hour earlier police and paramedics were called to a stabbing in Lime Grove, Lozells, at 6.40pm where an 18-year-old man was knifed in the groin.

And at 7.15pm they were called to a neighbouring street, Archibald Road, after a man was hit with a bottle and slashed across the leg with a machete.

It is little more than a year since the area exploded in rioting when gangs of thugs went on the rampage.

The trouble in October 2005 - sparked by unfounded rumours a young girl had been raped - claimed the life of Isaiah Young-Sam who was stabbed to death near his Lozells home.

Police are still investigating that weekend of trouble and have gone through more than 5,000 hours of CCTV footage - equivalent to 208 days of continuous recordings - in the hunt for thugs behind it.

The house targeted in last night's shooting remained cordoned off by police tape today.

A sole uniformed officer stood guard at the end of the driveway which was due to be examined by forensics experts later.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called to reports of two shots fired into the door of an address in Wheeler Street, Newtown.

"No one was injured and inquiries are on-going. There will be a full examination of the scene later."

Father of shot man asks for calm

Meshack Tesfa Bernard-Brown wanted to be a football coach

The family of a young man shot dead in a possible revenge attack have pleaded for the attacks to stop.

Meshack Tesfa Bernard-Brown was shot in Newtown, Birmingham, on his 20th birthday, on Monday evening. A 25-year-old man has been arrested.
Earlier, two Asian men had been stabbed in nearby Lozells. Police believe the incidents are linked.

On Wednesday, Meshack's father Andrew Brown said the callous acts of revenge and violence had to stop.
It would appear what we are dealing with is people who have sought to take matters into their own hands Det Supt Mick Treble He said: "My son has been killed... and this callous act of revenge, this lynch mobbing, whatever, has got to stop.

"I'm imploring to anyone out there now, I don't want any retributions, no-one thinking they can look for revenge for my son's death. "He's an innocent victim of these stupid, stupid, stupid people who think they can take matters into their own hands.

"All I want now for my son is justice, nothing else." Meshack, an aspiring football coach, was shot in Melbourne Avenue. His death is being investigated alongside two incidents in Lime Grove and Archibald Road earlier in the evening, where an 18-year-old was stabbed in the groin and a 22-year-old slashed on the leg by what was thought to be a machete.

Incidents linked
Det Supt Mick Treble of West Midlands Police said there was no doubt in his mind the incidents were linked. "It would appear what we are dealing with is people who have sought to take matters into their own hands to find out who was responsible for the wounding that happened earlier.

"A group of individuals that have gone to the Melbourne Avenue area, have found someone and this is possible a case of mistaken identify." There was no evidence to link Meshack to the stabbing incidents he said.

The 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Further arrests are expected. Investigations are also continuing into an incident in Wheeler Street in Newtown where shots were fired at a house on Tuesday night.

You ever heard of the Golden Rule. He who has the gold makes the rules!

He who asks is a fool for five minutes. He who never asks remains a fool for ever.

"A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder."

An almost total news whiteout. Interesting.
