Child sex caller made 4,500 calls
A man who posed as a doctor and made obscene calls to children across the UK has been jailed for 15 months.
John Phillips, 65, of Meadowfield, Stocksfield, Northumberland, was also placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years at Leicester Crown Court.
He made 4,554 calls to the youngsters from phone booths near his workplace in Gateshead, pretending to be a physician carrying out sexual health checks.
He was caught after a family in Leicester made a complaint.
As well as asking personal questions, Philips also tried to persuade the youngsters to undress and perform sex acts.
If they refused he threatened to take them through the "tests" in front of class-mates at school.
'Unprecedented'
His victims included children in Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Rugby, Sheffield, Leeds, Reading, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham and parts of Wales.
"All of these children must still continue to suffer every time the phone rings," said Stuart Rafferty, for the prosecution.
Detectives recorded some 584 "blocks" of calls made from the Gateshead area between November 2004 and February 2006, with one session in a kiosk lasting nearly four hours.
The true number of calls made may never be known, the court heard, and lawyers described the case as "unprecedented" for nuisance callers because of the sheer magnitude.
Phillips used phone directories to target children from ethnic minorities because he thought they would be more respectful and less likely to challenge an authority figure, the court was told.
He had previously admitted causing a public nuisance and three specimen counts of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity.
Phillips also pleaded guilty to intentionally causing or inciting an 18-year-old woman to engage in sexual activity.
