Rah!

Just come in,turn on news, see Toyin, nearly choke on food, put food down....run to the computer.

Incognito-you are right,Toyins features have definately changed since I last saw him.

Secondly-Toyin has nuts of STEEL for what he did today, not so much for what he said, but WHERE he said..because of this he has now entered a whole other level of scrutiny, which I wouldnt wish upon anyone.

I'm very proud of him though because he walks the walk as well as talking the talk...and that aint easy in this climate, truss!

I havnt been on Ligali for weeks and weeks but if they are setting up sort of defence fund...i'm there.

I aint asking for nothing, just open the door and i\'ll take it myself-James Brown.

Ever since I first met him I've had infinite respect for this guy, and in my opinion, someone as passionate about what he believes in deserves nothing less.

JettB - Toyin is a soldier defending values, virtues and principles. A bit like me, if a forum ban or suspension is a consequence of defending those values then believe me Toyin will see a criminal record, a prison sentence or an asbo as a badge of honour.

The scrutiny you mention is worrying only because he is an African brother. Take it for granted Ligali are already being monitored 24/7 and if they could put a fundamentalist tag on them they would have years ago. If you know the rules of the game you'll know how to break them....legally.

The philosphy behind any political agenda I ascribe to goes straight for the juggler so I've never seen much worth in us toiling and firefighting just to put egg on someones face but this episode ticks all the right and necessary boxes. I'm just looking out for all the government puppets i.e. the Sewells and the Philips to jump on Toyins back but then I've got this feeling they would have been so humbled and humiliated by Toyins actions they'll be resiging their posts to sign up with Ligaliclp)

This is from my blog:

The Atlantic Slave Trade: Marking 200 Years of its Abolition

It has been on my mind to write for some time now about this, given that I wrote an essay called White Lies which focused on some of the underlying issues regarding this subject last September. I was finally spurred to write by an article I read on the web about a protester interrupting a formal service held by the Anglican Church in England attended by The Queen and Tony Blair, marking 200 years of the act to abolish the slave trade.

The protestor Toyin Agbetu protested at the involvement of African Christians in the ceremony. To an extent I agree with him, but I have reservations about that.

My view is that Africans have also accepted the same spiritual vine that allowed the slave trade to exist for hundreds of years before abolishing it. Why oh why does the major Christian church in Africa bear the denominational title, “The Church of England!? With our food, clothing, music we have our own cultural forms and “parallel expressions (our own versions) of what “white people do, but in our own land - the The Church of England is what people cling to!? To me this fundamentally nonsense, irrirating, irrational and basically wrong! Black people and Africans need to define their own Christian space to follow the teachings of the Christian bible away from the twisted ideals of the oppressors, that led our forfathers into slavery in the first place. Forgiveness is good, without it we will always be at war; but; making the same spiritual misjudgements as the oppressor is so blind, it makes me want to blow my brains right out!

Can somebody please wake the Christian church in Africa up, and VERY SOON!?

The Church of England is possibly about to split over the issue of homosexuality. The African churches that belong to the Church of England are holding to a more “traditional and in this case correct interpretation of the bible that forbids homosexuality, whereas the European (actually American) communion is leaning the other way. How is it that the African Bishops are taking a stand on this issue, but to my knowledge have been strangely silent about slavery, and how Africa has been ruined by 400+ years of exploitation? The biblical exhortation is to loose the cords of injustice (Isa 58:6), and it was unjust for slavery to start, the nations were not at war, Africa owed Europe no debt, but greed and exploitation forcibly made and enduring mark on Africa’s development as a continent and a people.

Slavery ended 200 years ago, but were land rights restored? Were the rights to valuable minerals compensated and restored? Were the communities shattered by slavery rebuilt? Were the slaves compensated, or did many of them have to face segregation? In fact - isn’t it true that many slave owners (including the Church of England) were compensated, but slaves were not. Are black people still today regarded as “the other in a white society that continues to demean us, and let it’s institutional frameworks dumb us down and discriminate against us? Until there is an apology and some form of reparation, I think white people will still have a subliminal superiority complex over black people. One could even argue that the reason no apology from the monarchy and reparations is forthcomming is precisely because they favour that the present situation should persist.

The Jews got compensation from the Germans and so did allied countries after WWII, the Jews suffered terrible things at the hands of Hitler, yet they suffered less than a decade. How is it that 400 years of black suffering, segregation and institutional racism is not worth what the Jews managed to obtain? Yet many foolish white people are claiming that Africa should be thankful for the involvement of the Europeans, and that European nations have all been involved in the husltles and conflict of war and slavery. But isn’t the point that the Europeans did invade a people at peace with them, and then set in place a institution of oppression that lasted 400 years, with the legacy still affecting us today?

You know I am going to draw a parallel now, that will make you think again and shudder at what is being done to us. Many people kicked up a fuss in the UK about the death of David Kelly and the Iraq War (if you don’t know about those things check out Wikipedia or some other resource). Basically, the Government adopts a stratergy of delay any mechanism that can bring about resolution to the problem until the problem is past resolution. So many times we see the mechanisms of society string things out, to wear down a cause, to exhaust people of funds and deny justice. That is just what has been going on as regards slavery.

It is a shameful abomination that nothing has been done to stop the effects of this tragedy once and for all. The Western world can not deny that it has grown rich off the back of slavery, and the current prosperity of the western nations is in a significant proportion a direct result of the cheap labour that they traded in and relied on for the 400 years that the Atlantic Slave Trade ran its course.

The problem is the thief has painted himself as first as “bringers of civilisation, then as “benevolent lords and benefactors, and now as “caring people. A thief is a thief no matter what they paint themselves as, and the prosperity that a theif hands down to his progeny is a corrupt treasure. Of course the true teaching of the bible is for thieves to give back what they owe, and if they do not, one can clearly see they are not repenant. I truly believe that the argument for the restitution of Africans and the descendents of slaves is strong, but in today’s corrupt world, what leader and what monarch would have the integrity to degree such a thing, regardless of how strong a case there is for it?

But do the rulers know that if they do not do right, that those who serve them will also not know how to do right? And so society will continue to fall apart before our very eyes, as the poor are trampled on and have no recourse to address the wrong done to them, and injustice follows injustice in every sphere of life. People can see the world is becomming more greedy every day, it really is dog eat dog. It seems to me that we are all making a rather nasty bed for ourselves to lie in, how can we sleep? Surely those that follow us in later genrations will hate us if we do not stop the tyranny that is ruining mankind.

Ok someone needs to school me on this..........Why did he stand up and demand an apology from the Queen and Tony Blair?? I mean what is an apology going to do?? Anyone can say sorry but isn't it more important to get people to understand exactly what they are supposed to be apologising for??
