Hackney Schools and the Black Child 2007

10 March 2007
Diane Abbott MP has campaigned on black children and education for many years. In 1999 she held the first Hackney Schools and the Black Child conference. Since then she has held four London-wide conferences with the support of the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone. They have kept the issues around Black Children and education firmly on the Government agenda and have led to a range of positive outcomes
including 'Aiming High', the first ever Government initiative designed to specifically raise the achievement of Black Children.

In Hackney since 2002, there has been year on year improvement for Black Pupils at 14 and 16. However, there is still a gap in performance and we cannot be complacent. The Learning Trust, schools, communities and families need to work together to consolidate the gains made for students and to challenge underachievement.

This is the first conference jointly organised by The Learning Trust and Diane Abbott MP.

This practical conference, aimed primarily at Black parents, will explore the following issues:-
- How Black parents can work successfully with
their child’s school
- Meeting the needs of Black children in the
early years
- The role of fathers in raising children
- Getting Black boys reading
- Supporting the very bright Black child
- Is the family able to counteract the negative
impact of media, culture and stereotyping?

The conference will be opened by Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney.

Speakers will include:-
Diane Abbott MP
Alan Wood, Chief Executive of The Learning Trust
Head Teachers and Special guests from the worlds of education and the media.

Practical workshops and seminars for parents, educators and young people will include:-
- Being an effective parent – PTAs, Governors & Exclusion
- How parents can best meet the needs of children in their early years
- Strategies for home and school to get Black
children - especially boys -enjoying the experience of reading
- Fathering Black boys with and without men
- Developing a vision for you and your child
- Is the family able to counteract the negative impact of gangs, media, culture and stereotyping?
- Working with your child’s school to help him or her learn.
