Jamaican wins deportation victory

Joy Bowman is training to be a nurse.
The mother of an Iraq war veteran facing deportation to Jamaica has won her fight to stay in the UK.
Joy Bowman, 49, and her daughter Chena, 15, both of Newcastle in north-east England, are celebrating after being granted indefinite leave to remain in the country.

In March, the pair were just hours away from deportation when the British Home Office agreed to review their asylum case.

Both her sons, Levon, 28, and Damian, 24, served in the British Army and her eldest was based in Basra.

Mrs Bowman came to the UK with her three children in 2001 claiming her abusive husband had threatened to kill her.

She was told she would have to leave the country with her daughter after a failed asylum application.

The trainee nurse spoke of her delight at being allowed to remain in Britain.

She said: "I am very happy. My friends and family are also over the moon."

'Traumatic wait'

Earlier this year, friends and supporters started a campaign to stop the deportation.

David Clelland, Labour MP for Tyne Bridge, supported the appeal by making representations to Home Office Minister Liam Byrne on behalf of Mrs Bowman and her daughter.

He said: "It's been a long, and traumatic, wait for the family and I am so pleased that we've finally managed to give this story a happy ending."

Her sons were allowed to serve in the British Army as they were Commonwealth citizens.

Both have now left the Army and have been granted permission to stay in the country by the Home Office.

You would think so too. I wonder what these Iraqui's feel when they see all these black man fighting for the UK and the USA. You couldnt blame them if they make black people targets for terror in the West. Go to a next country and fight against people who have done you nothing for a stay. Disgraceful.

Its not about losing sleep. If Islamic terrosist started to target African American neighborhoods as they are easy targets with little formal security/ because of the disproprtionate amount of African American/British soldiers they are encountering what would you say then.

With the cartoons that was banded about by the Palestinian or Jordanians *cant remember) about Condeleeza Rice do you think its lost on Arabs that Africans from the West are involved in 'another mans 'war as far as they see it even if those who serve do not.

I tell you dont be surprised if the day comes that all these black army personnel dont bring chickens home to roost that you dont want roosting.

Are you Iraqi? By chance have you ever noticed that other people do not go out of their way not toOFFEND YOU and your "people"????

Being part of an invading force thats seeks to colonise a country is hardly 'certain occupations' is it. Or maybe you dont see black soldiers in Iraq as fighting a WHITE MANS WAR.

The article stated that he won a deportation victory. I assume he WANTED to stay in England. So in fact some people are actually getting SOMETHING out of this deal! Furthermore the army is a PAYCHECK (as well as eligiblity to other government programs) for many black people/families. Again Your only argurment seems to be that Black people particpitating in these wars might 'piss of some Arabs'. But in case you haven't noticed Black people weren't on the best terms with Arabs BEFORE any Iraqi war.
