Washington, D.C.
Home to the largest population of African immigrants, the Washington, DC Metropolitan area is the natural location for "Passport to Africa," a week-long celebration of Africans and African culture. From 1990-2000, the African immigrant population grew by 148% in the Washington, DC area.
"Passport to Africa" will showcase the unique and diverse culture of this immigrant group by highlighting the art, poetry, cuisine, and music from various African countries.
Events planned during the week include discounts at several local African restaurants, an African poetry and art night, an African food and wine tasting, a showcase of local African designers and models, and a children's day event. A culminating event will be a private cocktail reception, hosted in conjunction with the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, to celebrate individuals who are helping to develop a positive image of Africa in the United States (US). Guests attending this reception, "Africans of Influence: Agents of Change," will include US Congressman Donald Payne, comedian Michael Blackson, poet Bassey Ikpi of HBO's Def Poetry Jam, actor Gbenga Akinagbe of HBO's The Wire, actor Emery Bright of HBO's The Wire and Law and Order, and Thomas Tapeh of the Philadelphia Eagles.
It is anticipated that other attendees during the week will include African diplomats, US government officials, staff from international organizations working in Africa, businessmen and women investing in Africa, members of the local African community, and other friends of Africa.
As Former Washington, DC Mayor Anthony Williams said, "Without question, African immigrants are an integral and vibrant part of the District." It is therefore important that the contributions made by this community are celebrated. A newly formed Office of African Affairs is also a part of the DC Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's administration.
