PMSL @ K,
Both you and I are glad he's gone, and I'm glad he didn't get much media attention.
RIP (don't)

You people are far too harsh on the poor soul. I remember the last joke i heard him tell, had me busting a gut!! it went something like this:
"aaarrrgghhh my kidney...".
of course i am no comedienne, so it may lose something in the punchline...
YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY OTHER PEOPLES\' OPINION OF YOU!! ;0)

Anybody see the sympathetic piece written about this man in the Mail (sieg heil) today? Written by jewish Michael Winner no less, who would have us believe this fat racist fool was a champion of free speech maligned by evil PC liberals and blah blah blah.

I thought the some of his jokes were funny.
He was a working class man who built his popularity on working class (and bourgise) fears and ignorance of Black and and Asians.
Not all his jokes were racist.
Neither were his actions, like sending a sick Asian boy to Disney Land (U.S) or charitable donations to various religious and communities.
He was a Man of his time. Many of the so called Comedians are not even funny but get paid to make programmes with horrendous stereotypes;
Ali G
Miss Joscelyn
Big Brother Contestants of African\Caribbean origin
Lenny Henry !
Crass examples of even worse racial humiluation often played out by ourselves which is the greater sin.
Bernard Manning became the scrapgoat for all the Jim Davisons and the rest of the 1970's post Music Hall Comedians.

Thought he was a crap comic, who was both aware of the impact he had and revelled in it. Anyone remember the session he did in Derby which led to the hotel it took place at losing an employment tribunal case brought by two black waitresses? Tells you all you need to know.
Of all the racism that used to pour out of British TV in the Seventies, his was what you were most likely to hear at school the day after broadcast. Not Alf Garnett (who was actually satirising white working-class racism); not 'Love Thy Neighbour'; but Bernard Manning. Why I don't know, but that is what has given him the infamy as far as I'm concerned.
Mind you, some of the press commentary in the last few days has been just as pathetic, from those speaking in support of him and against him.
To me, there's not a huge difference between Manning and Little Britain, or Ali G, or Jimmy Carr for example. Slightly different targets; same malevolence underneath. British comedy hasn't really moved on as much as it likes to think it has over the last thirty years.
Mind your wants, 'cos somebody wants your mind
