China bans, "Rush Hour" film -
14-08-07, 07:19 PM
Rush hour stars shocked.
Chinese government bans third action film.
Its an extraordinary move, but Jackie Chans latest outing Rush Hour 3 has been banned in his native China. Chan, who is undoubtedly the biggest movie star in the counrty, is said to have been shocked at the decision, which was made by the Chinese government last week. The official reason is that China only accepts a certain amount of foreign films every year and has reached its quota. But insiders are saying its because they don't like US actor Chris Tuckers racial humor nor the films plot about a Chinese gangster family called the Triads, which were judged to be anti Chinese. It will certainly be a blow to Chan who, as part of his deal, got the Chinese and Hong Kong rights to the film and was hoping to make megabucks when it was released.

Gotta respect them. Wish we could do the same....
With that said I think times have really changed in a way, theres no making out that this is part of some draconian policy to oppress the poor and idle Chinese people, the same goes for the, 'Great firewall of China' its obvious that in this day and age with the devil running loose countries and nations need to put down certain laws to better protect their intrests and peoples. Can't stand the racial gollywogging in american films if we could ban it and certain other unwanted influences it'd do us all some good... even if it involed taking up some otherwise nasty Tibet oppressing idealogy to do it.
A quota on foreign films, one kick ass firewall and a ban on certain films and goods from being imported into the country. Gonna get me one of those red caps and a communist flag next time I'm in Camden.

Interesting one, been hearing not so good things about Rush Hour 3 (mostly about how sick certain critics are of Chris Tucker), which I won't commnet on til i've seen it. Rush Hour 2 also contained a lot of "anti-chinese" gags:
"LEE
No. You are a civilian. In China, I am
Michael Jackson, and you are Toto.
CARTER
You mean Tito. We had Toto for dinner
last night."
This "anti-Chinese" thing probably isn't the issue, maybe more about deflating two stars that demanded a bigger slice of the cake from both Countries. Maybe it's just a really shit film! and the Chinese don't wish to pollute their cinemas.

I dont get why countries ban things/people. If someone dosent like something, they have the choice not to watch it. Let the market decide.

Well impactplayer, if whites made a movie saying things racist against blacks then wouldn't you get angry and want it banned?

I presume if that happened there would be protest and such that would give it a bad reputaion and keep it from being played (i.e. Don Imus) but thats not the same thing as just blindly banning it.

Think they're a bit wiser than to ''blindly'' ban something. While they're rebuilding China they're making sure the money stays put and dosen't end up being wasted on sterotypical, ''lets dumb down our population so they're easier to control'' type films. Stem the flow of poision that would otherwise creep in and eat at their way of life, same with the, ''Great Firewall of China''. In the west the poision flows freely (we call it 'Freedom') moaning and complaining about this and that whilst putting up with its infulence generation after generation, the Chinese simply aren't letting that happen at all. For real, they've got Macdonalds out there for example but they've got another company in the same colours, same kind of logo selling (healthy) traditional Chinese fast food, big supermarkets have contracts out there but they're stocked with chinese food. They're smart, get the opinion they see foriegn/western culture as their new opium and aren't letting it get at their population like it did last time.
Cant wait for the day when, ''Big mommas house 5'' is banned across the continent.

I think that's probably the main reason. China is not messing around these days. And the Chinese man vs African American gags must have run its course by now.

dont see the point in them banning the film when for three films none of the chinese actors/actresses had any problems with the roles, script or context. you dont hear them complaining so why should we care?
you'll find in most films especially comedies they take the mick out of other races. some examples:
guess who
crash
bringing down the house
barbershop
there is more but cant think right now.
what we need to do is stop using the n-word in black films and songs.

i see the Chinese have a spine when it comes to fundamental beliefs. however when the same situation is applied to African/ Black Americans you would think we don't physically have a spine.
i wonder what the 22nd Centruy would look like?

They are right to ban it, if they feel it makes them look silly. I recall seeing RH2 and even I was uncomfortable with the anti-Chinese stuff in it. I don't like the way they have a black actor doing it either. I would rather the American whites who are scared of the Chinese becoming more powerful than them keep us out if it. I also think we should be more vocal when it comes to anti-black films, yes even those made by black people.
