Race 'revenge mob' killed innocent Birmingham man Meshack Brown, court told Nov 29 2007

A MOB of masked Asian men in search of revenge found a group of Afro-Caribbeans and blasted one of them at random in the chest with a shotgun, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Meshack Brown fled from the scene but collapsed and was taken to hospital, where doctors were unable to save his life.

Mahtab Azam, 20, of Francis Road, Lozells, Asif Nadeem, 27, of Brunswick, Handsworth, and Mohammed Asif, 20, of Lime Grove, Lozells, all deny murdering Mr Brown and a charge of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

Stephen Linehan QC, prosecuting, said: "This case is about the death of a young man from the Afro-Caribbean community. He was killed by a large group of men from the Asian community in revenge for attacks by Afro-Caribbean men upon Asian men."

He said on November 13 last year, there were two separate incidents, one in Lime Grove and the other in Francis Road within 25 minutes of each other, when two Asian cousins were both stabbed in the leg by Afro-Caribbeans.

"It would not surprise you to hear that the news of these two attacks spread," he said.

As a result, Asian men gathered in the area and talked about the stabbings, said Mr Linehan.

At the same time, he said Mr Brown, 20, from Hockley, who had nothing to do with the stabbings, and a number of other Afro-Caribbean males had got together in a cul-de-sac just off Melbourne Avenue, Newtown.

At around 8pm, a group of around 30 Asian men formed a "revenge party" and marched to the mouth of the cul-de-sac.

Many had their faces covered by balaclavas, hoods and scarves, while one was armed with a shotgun, he said.

Mr Linehan said Mr Brown and others with him were taken by surprise and that the person wielding the gun then raised it and fired it, hitting the victim in the chest.

The group scattered and Mr Brown, despite his fatal injuries, was able to run away across a park, but was pronounced dead in the early hours of the next morning.

Mr Linehan said the defendants had been part of the mob, but it was not the prosecution case that any of them had fired the shot that killed the victim.
