A black woman lawyer, who was brought up by a white single mother on a Carlisle council estate, has been selected to fight one of the safest Tory seats.
Helen Grant, 43, who runs her own law firm specialising in family breakdown and community law, will fight Maidstone and the Weald at the next election.
The former judo champion was chosen to succeed Ann Widdecombe, who is retiring.
Mrs Grant, who was on the A list set up by David Cameron to fast track more women from ethnic minorities into winnable seats, will defend a 15,000 majority in the party's 10th safest seat and would be the Tories' first black woman MP.
Her success in Kent is a breakthrough in Mr Cameron's attempts to modernise the party's image, and she is the first black woman to be selected to defend a Tory seat.
