State Of Black America -
23-02-08, 07:18 PM
The State of Black AMerica Event is happening today. The first part was on from 9 to 1 EST and the second part will be on from 2 to 6pm EST, in about 45 minutes. You can watch it live at C-SPAN | Capitol Hill, The White House and National Politics. After it's over, I'm sure you can watch it in it's entirety on the website, as well..

The first part of the State of BLack America, program was excellent. HIghlights for me were:1. Jesse Jackson basically acting like an Obama surrogate(Obama declined to participate), and making some comments that were obviously intended towards Tavis SMiley about how this is a historical moment for America and we should all just get on Board and not be party poopers, more or less. I found that interesting, because from the jump, Obama has been presented by his supporters as the ANTI Jesse, yet Jesse is all about Obamarama....
2.Michael ERic Dyson's breakdown of the three categories of Black: incidental Black, accidental Black, and intentional BLack, lol, and how we all move in and out of those categories depending on the situation, but some people do tend to stay in one of those categories more than the others.
3. Tavis and others talking about how many Black folks who have paid their dues and been working on behalf of BLack folks for YEARS, are getting thrown under the bus by other Black folks, if they support Clinton, or dont' support anyone, but just demand accountability for ALL candidates, like Tavis is doing.
4. Former Congressmen Cleo Fields of Louisiana who is an obvious and emphatic Obama supporter and repping that, but stating that he would be ready to FIGHT anyone who came at Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs JOnes wrong or tried to harm her, because she supports Hillary. He stated that she's been working on behalf of Black folks longer and in ways that most people can even dream of. NOw that's what I'm talking about.
5. NO Mayor Ray Nagin and his antics. I always find him entertaining.

Greetings Gmahogany777,
Long time; almost a year now. I assume you are the same Gmahogany because I notice the 777 and seems to me like everynow and then, there is a slight change in your name. I asume, it must be due to loggin problems.
First of all, You need to get on the Obama Express Train and help manuevre that Train to cruise to the finish line. Just kidding, just kidding. But seriously, I thought Obama should have made it to the "State of the Black Union" confrence. Do Folks think that by him not showing up is a mistake? He offered to send Michelle Obama, but Tavis Smiley rebuffed this offer. Personally, I think that we must expect that Barack Obama should be a President for all of America and not just cater solely to Black America. Particularly at this crucial moment, every movement he makes is scrutinized to microscopic levels. Also what do Folks think of Hillary Clinton going off today? Seems to me, she likes to throw punches, but can't stand it when the same is thrown at her.

Long time no see, VK. It is indeed me. Login problems were definitely the reason for the slight change. I hate changing my name, lol.

I did vote for Obama, back on SuperTUesday, VK. I said I would do so, in a thread about 3 months ago. I'm not as enthusiastic about that fact as I would like to be, and it's because of a lot what I've seen and heard from his hardcore supporters, among other things.
No, most Black folks don't think it's a mistake, because we are accustomed to being treated like "back alley hookers", as I stated in another thread. (I can have sex with you but i can't be seen with you).
It's interesting and offensive to me that it's only regarding Black events, that people feel that for a Black candidate to show up and show respect means that they are not going to be PRESIDENT of all the people. They never apply that logic to candidates of any other race. People act like this was a Nation of Islam or Black Panther rally or something. When white candidates show up to speak to gatherings of white people with very SPECIFIC special interests, nobody assumes that means they are only going to be President to that group(eventhough they often DO end up being president to one specific group, be it the wealthy, oil men, etc). A group of people are voting for you at 80 and 90% and you can't show up for 10 minutes and say thanks? Leave it to BLack folks to figure out a way to get LESS respect and regard from a Black candidate, than from non Black ones. This whole country is built on special interests groups, and people picking candidates that will cater to THEIR interests, whether it's the oil lobby, cattle industry, the pro gun lobby, Hispanics or whatever. Negroes are the only group who feel compelled to say we DON'T want anyone who is just going to cater to us,lol. That's real noble, cause NOBODY else feels that way, but our Black asses, lol.
I'm offended that he didn't show up, but not surprised. He didnt' show up last year either. He has Black people in his pocket already, so he has nothing to lose. If AA's were voting for him at 60% instead of 80 and 90%, he would have been there, cause he would have had no choice. If it had been the state of Hispanic America, he would have been front and center, though, and he would not have been worrying about how it looked to Black folks or anyone else.
Hillary went off today? About what?

Ofcourse, this will be seen like attending a Nation of Islam rally; with Dick Gregory all fired up. Ok, I need to stop kidding around and get serious here. Unfortunately I am now living and Working in Houston Texas and currently I do not have "TV One or The Black Family Network" channels, so I am clueless about what is going on in the Conference. Do conditinue to update us with what has been going on down there.
I saw only highlights of the event in New Orleans on CNN and the explanation as to why Barack could not attend. I also saw some Folks in the conference on CNN who said they understand Baracks hectic schedule to deal with the big prize, but even then his supporters there seem visibly uneasy about him not showing up. I have not heard from him the reason he did not show up.
Hillary went off this morning at Barack based on Fliers that the Obama campaign was distributing in Ohio that calimed that "Hillaries Healthcare Plan will force people to participate and garnish the wages of those who can't afford to pariticpate". The other explosive issue on those Fliers was that Hillary "Supported NAFTA and describing her as saying that 'NAFTA was an Economic Boom for the US". She was shown on TV so angry and so pissed when she was handed one of the Obama Fliers, it looked like she was ready to engage in a physical fight, and she used some hard hitting words describing Obama of using Republican Karl Rove dirty tactics that were designed to divide America and ending the angry speech with I will meet you in Columbus Ohio next week. Today, was the day I saw the bad and angry side of Hillary Clinton.

VK you can see the whole thing at C-SPAN | Capitol Hill, The White House and National Politics. Plus, they will rebroadcast it on CSPAN, this upcoming Friday.

The official reason is because of time constraints and needing to spend all his time with the voters in Texas and Ohio. THat's bogus. The thing was 8 hrs long, Hillary Clinton was there for 40 mins at the most. She didn't have to be there all day, and he would not have needed to be, either. He's didn't show up, cause he's worried about what white people are gonna think, and that tells me that things have NOT changed. THat is why, as I just announced in another thread, i've decided that though I voted for Obama in the Primary, I will NOT vote for him in the General Election.

Wow!, I didn't hear about that. I've was watching the Conference all day, so I haven't seen much political news, outside of that.

Well, Since I did not get the chance to see Tavis Smiley "State of Black America" conference, I decided to browse the net for details about peoples reaction. I found several articles by African Americans that were overwhelmingly critical of Tavis Smiley and his request that Barack Obama show up in Lousiana, rather than campaign hard to win the ultimate prize, since his (Barack's) plan basically addresses many of the concerns that African Americans have such as Healthcare, Troop withdrawal from Iraq, etc, etc.
I am not interested in the Opinions of TV Journalist, but I am interested in hearing the opinions of ordinary people and the majority here proposed that Obama concentrate on the so called "Big Prize". You can read the whole episode here and then browse down to read the commentary of the readers.

Tavis Smiley is not merely a tv journalist, his activism and works in our community are well documented and known, but that's neither here nor there. Obama's reason for NOT showing up this year and LAST year, have NOTHING to do with time/schedules or wanting to spend every minute with voters. Clinton was in and out of there in 30 minutes, TOPS. He didn't show up, because he and his advisers think that to do so would turn off or scare white voters.
I never stated that the majority of AA's had a problem with Obama not showing up. My position is the exact opposite. MOst of us DON'T have a problem with it, because we are accustomed to back alley hooker status and we are totally drinking the poison Kool Aid, Guyana style, lol. We'll accept and allow disrespect from Obama because he's Black and we think that somehow it will be different if and when he gets into office. That somehow, he'll STOP being concerned with appeasing white folks. I beg to differ. Once he's elected, he'll want to be REELECTED, and he will still be worrying about what white folks think about him doing x,y/z in regards to Black folks, be it signing legislation, appointing judges, fowarding certain policy agendas.....
I said that GMAHOGANY has a problem with it, and will not be voting for him in the General Election. What other AA's do is their own business. I'm voting for McCAin. with his 100 more years in Iraq agenda, and all......
I'm familiar with the article, CAsh Money posted some comments from AA's who DID have a problem with him not showing up, in the Obama/Oprah alliance thread.

@gmahogany
You don't come across as a 'flip flopper' but isn't there something that he can do from now to November that would get him back in your corner
