Unhappy Shop Worker Killed In Matalan Robbery - 24-03-08, 12:21 AM

Shop Worker Jamie Simpson Killed In Robbery At Matalan Store In Hackney, East London |Sky News|UK News

A shop worker has been stabbed to death during a suspected robbery at a Matalan store.

Jamie Simpson: Attacked in storePolice have launched a murder inquiry after assistant manager Jamie Simpson was killed in Hackney, east London.

The 33-year-old is thought to have been attacked as he was counting the day's takings shortly before 8pm on Saturday night.

A post mortem established the cause of death as a stab wound to the neck.

Three men are believed to have assaulted him in the office area and then run from the store via the rear car park in Dalston Lane.

Staff found Mr Simpson soon after the attack at Kingsland Shopping Centre and called emergency services, but he was pronounced dead just after 8.30pm.

He had worked as an assistant manager at the store for the past three years. No arrests have yet been made and detectives have appealed for witnesses.

Police do not believe the store was randomly targeted and extra officers have been sent to the area to help reassure the community.

Officers said the victim "was known as a reliable, hard working and a diligent member of staff who would always be available to assist his colleagues and customers."

Detective Inspector Lawrence Smith said: "We believe that the three individuals involved lay in wait at the store and then confronted the assistant manager.

"The description that we have of them is of three young black males. We do have CCTV which is being looked at."

Det Insp Smith said the attack was not witnessed by any other member of staff.

He was particularly keen to speak to anyone who had seen suspicious individuals hanging round the back of the store before closing time which was 7pm.

Officers were also talking to residents at a nearby block of flats to see if they had witnessed the attackers running away.

Det Insp Smith said he believed the attack was intended to be a robbery but said he did not what, if anything, had been stolen.

RIP Jamie

Detectives investigating the murder of a shop manager stabbed to death in a suspected robbery have released CCTV footage of three suspects.
Jamie Simpson, 33, was knifed in the neck as he was cashing up at the Matalan store in the Kingsland Shopping Centre in Hackney, East London on Saturday evening.
Police believe three men lay in wait inside the shop, and then attacked Mr Simpson in the cash office as he counted the day’s takings shortly before 8pm.
The trio are then thought to have made off via the shopping centre’s rear car park on Daltson Lane.

Mr Simpson, from Herne Hill, South London, who had been assistant manager at the shop for the past three years, was found at around 8.30pm by other staff, who called emergency services.
He was later pronounced dead at hospital. A post-mortem examination revealed he died from a stab wound to the neck.
Police searching for a trio of suspects have released CCTV images of the men, their faces partially obscured by hoods.
Detective Inspector Laurence Smith, of the Metropolitan Police, said: “Mr Simpson was completing his day’s work when he was fatally assaulted during a suspected robbery at his store.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the shopping centre around closing time or witnessed the assailants making off from the store via the rear car park.
“Mr Simpson was known as a reliable, hardworking and diligent member of staff who would always be available to assist his colleagues and customers.
“We believe that the three individuals involved lay in wait at the store and then confronted the assistant manager. The description that we have of them is of three young black males.”
Mr Smith said the attack was not witnessed by any other member of staff.
He said he believed the attack was intended to be a robbery but he did not know what, if anything, was stolen. It is thought that the Matalan store was specifically targeted, and extra police officers have been sent to the area to reassure the local community.
Billy Clegg, a spokesman for Matalan, said: “The circumstances of the attack are being investigated by the police.
“Our first priority at this time is the welfare of the other members of staff at the store. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends.”
Police asked witnesses or anyone with information to call the incident room on 0208 345 1585 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.

The family of murdered Jamie Simpson are asking people who want to pay their respects to send floral tributes or a cash donation.

Mr Simpson, 33, died on Saturday, March 22, after he was stabbed in the neck at Matalan, in Kingsland Shopping Centre, London, where he was assistant manager.

He was sorting through the day's takings when he was attacked by three men in what was thought to have been a bungled robbery.

His family - mum Lorna, dad Lambert and sisters Helen, Claire and Vanessa - of Old Normanton, have asked that people wishing to send flowers or make a donation in his memory should contact Wathalls Funeral Parlour, in Macklin Street, Derby.

Donations, made payable to "G Wathalls and Son" will be shared among several charities, including WaterAid.

Mr Simpson's funeral will take place at Derby Cathedral on Thursday, May 15, at 11.30am.

Many of our hard-working people all over the world keep getting killed off by our own kind. I guess they just can't stand to see another black person successful. Just stupid.
