Teenager killed in Damilola Taylor-style attack -
05-05-08, 10:18 AM
Lyle Tulloch, 15, was killed near his home in the early hours of Saturday, making him the 12th teenager to be murdered in London so far this year.
He was stabbed and left to bleed to death in a stairwell close to his home in Peckham, south London.
He died less than a mile from where Damilola was murdered with a broken lager bottle in Nov 2000.
Yesterday Lyle's mother, Yvonne Tulloch, 46, described her son as "a lovable boy".
She said: "My son wanted to be a lawyer and he was trying to find his way in life. No one, absolutely no one, should have to die like this. It's horrible. Lyle grew up a bit fast maybe, but my son was a hard-working boy, a sweet child with a good heart.
"The last thing I want is for him to be another statistic. My son was a thinker and he was just trying to find his way.
"He wanted to help himself and have the best life he could."
Lyle's death took place just hours before Boris Johnson, London's new mayor, pledged to "lead the fight back" against violent crime.
Mr Johnson said: "I think this problem with kids growing up and getting lost in tragic and self-destructive choices is the number one issue we face in this city."
Last year Lyle was expelled from Peckham Academy after he got into trouble with the authorities and began smoking high-strength cannabis called "skunk".
By Christmas he was thought to be dealing drugs and involved in low-level crime. The teenager was killed after a row broke out at a party near his home.
Just before the stabbing he was chased by a gang of youths armed with knives, poles and dogs. Black community leaders said Lyle's death would be "just another in a long line of funerals" if the issue was not effectively tackled.
Uanu Seshmi, the leader of the charity From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation, which helped Lyle for seven months last year, said: "He had his problems but he knew he wanted to overcome his troubles.
"He dreamed of being a lawyer and we used to talk about that. He was certainly intelligent and had potential.
"His death is a tragedy but there will be many more murders unless the Government does something to deal with the problems on these streets."
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old arrested after the incident have been released on police bail. A 15-year-old was released with no further action.

A REFORMED trouble-maker who dreamed of being a lawyer was stabbed to death in a row over a £50 mobile.
Lyle Tulloch was knifed three times – once in the heart – in a stairwell.
Pals at the same party believe it was a planned attack. The killer, in his mid teens, accused Lyle of stealing the phone, then lunged at him with a hidden blade.
The lad screamed and collapsed bleeding at flats in Southwark, South London, at 1.40am on Saturday.
Lyle is London’s 12th teen murder victim this year
His best friend, known only as Ramon, leapt 20ft from a second-floor balcony to flee the killer and an accomplice. Last night the 15-year-old said: “Lyle was laughing with his attackers before it happened. One was mixed race, the other black. The mixed race one accused him of taking a mobile, which he didn’t.
“Lyle saw a knife up his jumper sleeve, backed off, then I heard him scream.
“There was a lot of tension at the party. There were 17 boys and just three girls. I believe the killing was set up.”
Lyle’s mum Yvonne Tulloch, of Peckham, said: “The boys knew he didn’t have the mobile. The one with the knife was intent on doing harm.”

How do you believe this to be connected to the murder of young Lyle Tulloch, or are you simply trying to divert attention away from his murder?
