Shedding Light On Some Shade: A 14k Gold Noose

Posted by Angel Elliott; BET News for You(th) Vote!

Ok ok… I know last week us you(th) voters focused a lot on race, and issues

pertaining to it…but I just had to let you be the witness to some ridiculousness that I came across on the Internet (shout out to bossip!)

You would think with all the focus on race and gender in politics lately, and the outbreak of noose hangings at college campuses (not to the mention what hanging a noose did in Jena, Louisiana), that Disney, an entertainment company for kids, would not inadvertently participate in the foolishness.

As a part of their Pirates of the Caribbean “Dead Man’s Chest” couture jewelry collection, Disney has created a 14k gold plated noose necklace; oh yeah…and the matching earrings. Now obviously they wouldn’t do this with any malicious intent…but you would think the advisory board or somebody would stop and think of the implications this necklace may presumably have.

Still…would you buy this for your kid?

I see what you're saying..I think it's a bit reaching though.
I wouldn't buy it for any children but there are plenty of adults who love POTC (I may be biased because I loved all of the movies and went as Jack Sparrow to a costume party before).

I will agree though that taken out of context the noose could represent other things for the reasons you named and knowing Disney and their fear of controversy and reputation for overprotecting their image I am also surprised that they would let this fly.

I don't know much about "pirate" history/roots but the noose is also representative of that culture so I don't think it's inappropriate.
