I think you will find that there appears to be division of opinion dependant on what side of the pond you stand... However from a uk stand point and as someone who knows his history.. I do not find the N word a term of endearment or appropriate to be use by ANYONE regardless....

I don't see how the use of the N word can be empowering ever and the very fact that some black folks are prepared to defend the use of this word is mind boggling.

i feel more anger by the use of it by rappers than whites....i expect it from whites because they are ignorant that way and i can always call them by the term. but to see these ignorant young punks and rappers defending the use of it is sickening.

it ain't empowering, it's stupid...and offensive

How can you even question if such a word is empowering? What kind of empowerment can it give us?

The fact this is still a debate is sad in itself.

There's no convincing a lot of people in our community who badly want to use the word to stop using it. Those same people will talk around the houses all day and give you a million reasons as to why they're not African.

The N word
@ cjones

Before deciding whether to take part in your survey, I would be grateful if you could answer a few questions yourself:

How are YOU defining the word 'EMPOWERING' in this context?

Who/what (e.g. which magazine/paper) is the article being written for?

Are you intending on using the results from the survey to draw 'conclusions' about black people's reaction to the use of the word?

If so, how big a statistical sample are you going to use for the purpose of drawing such conclusions?

I note your survey does not ask for which country the person responding is from. Surely the article would be put in better context by noting the attitudes of blacks in different parts of the world?

What is YOUR personal view on the use of the word?

What is YOUR race?

Very good questions, and I would be surprised if they are answered by this phantom poster.

Was going to say the same thing.

Got to introduce yourself before asking questions like that. Poxy english language has us open to their crap, too easy for them to stick their noses in our business.

Black Lion is... Agu Bu Oji in Igbo, Simba nyeusi in Swahili, the name of a hospital in Addis Adaba the capital of Ethiopia.

Thanks Backatya for asking what I was thinking. I don't want to find out that i helped contribute to a 'is education the reason why black women support R Kelly' type of article.

BTW - I abhor the word and have pulled up any black person i've heard say it, it empowers blacks as much as a women calling themselves slags would empower women i.e not at all.
