The associated press is reporting that the Zimbabwean government and opposition officials met in South Africa on Thursday to try to find a way out of their country's crisis, with the opposition pressing for "an end to attacks on its supporters". The report went on to say "opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said he sent a team to Pretoria, the capital, led by his top deputy Tendai Biti to lay down conditions for talks, not to open negotiations."
For anyone who has taken global politics 101...this is a major red flag. Two things stand out here. A man (Morgan Tsvangirai) supposedly under attack and forced to resort to hiding in foreign embassies is "sending his top deputy to lay down conditions for talks," and "not to open negotiations". It would seem that if your life and those of your supporters are threatened, then one would be very open to "opening dialogue" to end this oppression.
Additionally, by what authority is Mr. Morgan "laying down conditions for talks"? The answer is simple really, Mr. Morgan is embolden in his position by the threats of additional sanctions and possible invasion plans being spearheaded by both the UK and the US. He knows that his western backers are fired up and will accept nothing short of overturning of the administration of President Mugabe and the full restoration of an economical and political regime centered around the UK's interest and that of her allies.....
