Carry Your Baby On Your Back - Afrikan Style - 01-10-09, 12:00 AM

My little girl is 4 months old and I will be carrying her on my back, just like my mum did to me!

and a slightly different technique

ah i love this. When i was in Africa i said to my sister "when i have a baby i'm gonna carry it on my back!!!" . The baby always seems so happy and content, the mother can get on with day to day duties.

but when i had a baby it never really happened, i don't know why. I guess i didn't really know how to get the baby up their and tie it properly. I should have got one of my African friends to show me but once they left Africa they stopped carrying their children this way. My husband and i tried it once and took a photo but i don't think we did it right haha and baby was not happy!!

my next one is on the way, i might use this as instructions. I asked hubby if it would look funny being the only white girl carrying her baby African style.....he thought it would be pretty cool!!!!

I don't think it's practical to do that....

any more than it's practical to be carrying loads on your head for miles....

Carry loads on your head to carry more than one item, frees up your arms.

Unwise carrying a child on your back in that fasion outside of our homelands... people will play with them without you knowing and so on. Better having them at the front. Seen guys reversing the style in the video that way.

To clarify its only a method I would use when I am at home getting my chores done. I wouldnt venture on public transport in good old South London with a baby tied to my back - LOL- just not practical. If done correctly baby finds it very comforting and will often go off to sleep.

As for carrying loads on your head, it may be good for your posture, but I think I'll give that a miss : )
