Fact: Children up and down the country are being fed unhealthy diets at school.
Whats the best way around it. Packed lunch, or allow them to eat school diners with a view to feeding them properly when they get home?
If your option is the latter, Isnt the afternoonmeal a real important one? If they eat the unhealthy school diners wont this counteract any attempt to feed them correctly in the evening?

The field that I work in I supply food to schools that is put into vending machines. There is going to be a report coming out soon saying what foods we can and cannot supply, it all has to be healthy stuff. A recommendation has been drafted and it's real strict; no foods containing rice, potatoes, chocolates etc. We don't know what the final decision will be but if we have to do that for vending machines inside schools then the cooks will certainly have to change what they serve at lunchtimes.
Also with packed lunches you have to be careful. One woman at my work place did a packed lunch for her son. She gave him drink, sandwiches, fruit and a couple chocolate biscuits. The woman got blasted by theSCHOOL for putting TWO chocolate biscuits in HER son's packed lunch. These schools ain't rampin for real. Shame they can't be that strict in the damn classrooms.

My son's school have a healthy menu now, plus I'm lucky in that he likes salads, vegetables and pasta, so I'm happy enough with it.Not cheap though, at £1.50 a day.
You have to be careful with packed lunches. Some of these lunchbox foods are so full of fat and sugar. I had my son telling me that Cheese Strings were good for him, but when I checked the fat content.....wow!
Besides, I don't think it's only the food that's the problem. Kids nowadays don't ramp like we used to. Too busy playing xbox and Playstation to play British (!) Bulldog and Knock Down Ginger....
Could be down to the paedophiles in our midst - parents don't want to let their children out of their sight.

Packed lunch is bought onto school premises and they could argue that if they are trying to promote healthy eating it must comply with their regulations

Facetygal: if any school dared to chastise me about what I'd given to my children, my reply wouldn't be repeatable..they are friggin cheeky...

I know but at the same time I respect what the school is trying to do. Now if the school is concerned about what my child is eating I should be too.

the school can only be concerned about what is actually being served by them to the students.
if they are promoting healthy eating they can only give good and useful information allowing parents to make an informed choice rather than a forced choice
k, you love argue to much

No, but many schools have a policy about choclate biscuits, my childrens school always ruled against them and crisp. However it is more to do with keeping the school clean then the childrens health.

If we do not have an accurate analysis of the problem, we cannot possibly develop a good strategy to resolve it.

At times schools are sending out conflicting messages telling students to eat healthily and then serving junk at break and lunch times.
In my secondary school, they complained about the behavioural problems and lack of concentration from pupils and then introduced fizzy drink vending machines in the playgroud!
There are healthy food vending machines out there, but I don't know of any schools that have them.confused3

Why don't you ask your school why they choose a fizzy drink vending machine (bet it's full of well known brands)

Why a vending machine at all? (why not water bottles/holes)

I think you will find that the school is using the money from the machines(advertising) to pay for educational | | |
