Mothers (or even fathers!), what age was your child when you started weaning him/her? Is 6 months old too early??

You should follow your baby's lead, but 6 months isn't early at all.

I weaned my first two at 4 months - it was the "done" thing, but now the "experts" say 6 months .

Granted, Baby wasn't too interested at first, but now I don't even puree his food anymore (he's almost 9 months).

Also remember that Baby is used to what you ate during pregnancy, so maybe it'd be a good idea to start introducing those foods now.

Interesting, because all the medical advice I've read on this subject said the "good" age is 1 year! But I've known women to breastfeed up until 4 years old- but mostly for contraceptives purposes!

Interesting replies. I always thought that you should breastfeed/formula feed your baby for at least the first year.

Why I ask is that, our baby is just over 5 months and we had started giving her baby rice cereal along with breastmilk or formula from 4 months old. Nowadays she is not taking the breastmilk or formula like she used to.has she just gone off the taste or perhaps could that be a symptom of teething?

No, she just needs a change.

Babies get bored with the same tastes day in, day out.

Try some boiled potato with broccoli, mixed with a little of her milk.

Also get a blender and blend what you yourself eat. Remember, she's used to it from the womb. My one can't get enough of rice and peas.

Every chid is so different - follow your childs lead.

The "experts" used to religiously say 4 months they now say six.

I started weaning my children at 4 months - baby rice and pured fruit mostly.

my daughter continued on the breast as well until 16 months but also enjoyed her food.

My son was not interested in food and did not really start to take foods properly till 9 months - truth be told he still is not that interested in food at nearly 4 yrs old.
