I've already lowered his cot to the lowest level to prevent him climbing out, but tonight he's just climbed out and is now downstairs sitting on my knee! I'd put him to bed &tried to ignore the screaming, until I realised he was a lot nearer than he sounded on the monitor!

How do you prevent a 13 month old climbing out of his cot? Not only that, he climbed out, opened the bedroom door and came downstairs (he does that anyway)?

Melissa,

We had gates up at the top and bottom of the stairs, but after we saw how he dealt with them we took them away. He's never, ever fallen down them.

Gave him a bath, sang to him and read him a story...to no avail.

Tried again last night. I took everything from the cot that he may use as leverage, and left the cot in the middle of the room...yes, he got out again! I heard one great big buduff, I went running upstairs and nearly him with the door!

He likes to fall asleep in "hand", which I'm trying to get him out of, hence the Houdini acts.

Lol! Sorry but kids at that ages crack me up! So naughty without even realising. My sister used to leave the radio on low for my nephew so i guess thats something you could try if hes ok at sleeping in non silent environments.

slightly off topic but i've never known any baby to fall down the stairs come to think of it. My nephew was actually better at stairs than he was at walking on the floor lol.

LOL Awakening the genius of the African child.

@Vezzoes he seem really confident on the stairs? Sometimes when baby Maat is going on them I still fret a little myself. Anything can happen in seconds and it's hard not to worry! He also climbs out of his cot and climbs back in from his brothers' bed, but he goes to sleep at the same time as the other children. Putting him with them helped him know it was bed time.

I'm agreeing with the lines of less rest in the day to help him sleep through the night. Does he still have a rest?

He's been climbing up and down the stairs since he was 6 months. He has never fallen down. We took the gates away because we thought they may hurt him more, as they have a bar at the bottom. He climbed up them ok but was a bit scared coming down, so we gently turned him and eventually he came down himself. He just waves bye and goes about his business!

He falls asleep at about 9, but I want him to fall asleep in his cot as opposed to in hand.
