i want to enhance my sons learning from now. i occasionally read to him although he often snatches the book out of my hand and flicks through his book his self

he knows what to do on a computer and laptop but you know they aint toys

i will get him an educational laptop if i can find one for his age

but as he will be 2 very soon i want his presents to include something to encourage is learning.

any suggestions. he already does some counting and abc's and goes nursery

Sounds like that boy has what it takes to enhance his learning already.

A couple of months ago I bought my little Princess a pack of animal cards, with actual photographs of animals, insects and birds. I would show each individual card and repeat the name of the animal etc. She would usually repeat what I was saying. I would only do this occasionally, when I had the time. After a while she started recognising the photographs and would tell me what they are without any prompting. Now if she sees an animal she recognises on the t.v or on a t-shirt she will say the name straight away. She is amazing.

On Saturday to celebrate her 2nd birthday we went to a local zoo with members of my family. We had a picnic and it was great. It was also great to see my daughter's reaction when she saw the animals, birds and insects for real.

I find that showing my children how to do things a few times then getting them to do it helps a lot. They seem to want more hands on things or just everything LOL at that age and the trick is directing them to things that can keep them thinking and challenged. I get them helping around the house aswell with simple things like loading the washing machine or putting the shopping away. It can work in your favour too!!

I made up some alphabet cards since my first child and simply show the cards and say the letters to them from about 3 months. Get them used to it. Reading to them seems to fascinate them too. As they get older I get them to repeat words I want them to remember and show examples to them when we are outside so they can make the connection and recognise these things by themselves.

The teaching can be very practical but for other activites the early learning centre is quite good.

For yourself have patience because it can be frustrating sometimes. Also if you want to spend concentrated time on helping him learn do it for only 5 or 10 minutes at a time or until he seems to lose interest rather than push him.

@Vezz: I agree with not talking in baby talk to them for too long and feel also less shy about making up songs for my children too. Phew! We have a collection now that all of them know.
