A man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple is being made to pay child support - let us know what you think
Thirty-seven year old Andy Bathie, a firefighter from London, agreed to help Sharon and Terri Arnold after they
assured him he would have no involvement in the children's upbringing and no financial commitment.
He is now having his pay docked to pay thousands of pounds in child maintenance even though he
has no legal rights over the boy and girl the couple had. He says the payments mean he and his wife cannot afford to have children of their own.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority is warning "DIY" donors they are liable financially unless they donate through a licensed clinic.
Men who give sperm through HFEA-licensed clinics have no legal obligation to a child created through the donation process.
The Department for Work and Pensions, which is responsible for the CSA, says "Unless a child is legally adopted, both biological parents are financially responsible for their child - the Child Support Agency legislation is not gender or partnership based.
"Only anonymous sperm donors at licensed centres are exempt from being treated as the legal father of a child born as a result of their donation. This does not apply to men who donate sperm as part of a personal arrangement."
