Sorry. I think your being lazy in your thinking. Why is it when it comes to African history most in the West think about America. Why you looking to Americans for?

No doubt if you are from Africa or the Caribbean you have a wealth of your own history which should be known first and most intimately.

Also I cant beleive that in the West Midlands of which Birmingham is a part they are no black bookshops where you can get childrens books. Otheriwse take a day drip to London. This looking to America for historical substance is all part of this Americansisation that adults and our children suffer from.

The slave trade is a myth.

We are the original people.

We were in "America" and "the Caribbean" and "Asia" and Spanish-speaking countries and everywhere else long before the degenerates known as white people decided to pollute the earth with themselves.

The reason why we are all over the world in large numbers is NOT because of a slave trade, but because we went there(in some cases to stomp on white people that were getting out of pocket).

The majority of "blacks" today in the states and elsewhere are natives of that land.

White people didn't know how to wash their own asses before we taught them, so they damn sure couldn't enslave millions of us and then transport us all over the world. There was some trading going on, but not to the degree many people believe.

The best thing you can do is to properly educate yourself on our global history, and then to choose age appropriate and rich material to share with your child.

Never let him come to believe he is a descendant of a slave.

i dont need to be told to do something i am already doing, DO YOU KNO HOW BIG LONDON IS ?your comment insinuated i was seeking an easy way to address the issue when in fact there is no easy way at all. i am offended by being called lazy, i am a first time Mom and as all mothers I want to the best by my child and that means leaning on the knowldege and skills of others. I ONLY SAID THE US BECAUSE IT IS ONLY THEM I HAVE COME ACROSS WITH PUBLISHED COPIES OF BOOKS FOR BLACK CHILDREN THAT ADDRESS VARIOUS HISTORICAL TOPICS IN A CHILD CENTERED MANNER- IF U GOT ANY LONDON ENGLISH OPTIONS PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME.

Black book shops

There you go. Gives plenty of black book shops in London. Maybe you want me to read them to your child too..

Laziness is a sin. For the record for a young mum to be concerned about such things is
quite encouraging. Hope you find what your looking for.

Ok Sundays it is then. Just make sure you got a nice plate of food for me because its a drive to the land of Brum. Hope you got Sky Sports too...

Unconstructively critisising..like it..!! Nope Im a child of the summer solistice. Thats your only clue.

Get yourself down to London or wherever and buy some books. You wont find half the selection on the internet from my experience.

Also for your 8 year old (my child is similiar age) there are very few good children's books that put our history into whole context. Very few. Yes you will find stories with black faces / you might find childrens books on Rosa Parks/ Martin Luther King and all that nonsense but very few illustrated books showing our civilisations in a digestable format. As I said before at that age my belief is to focus on the positive and our achievements PRIOR to being in contact with other civilisations. So my focus is always on pre-slavery/colonialisation history. Definately none of this first black man/woman to do abc in a white society nonsense which is weak and slave minded in my view. Give them a sense of what can be achieved by themselves/ for themselves / in their own setting. Children are no fools. They will read between the lines.

you wouldnt be wrong for reading the same kind of thing in a book so no way are you wrong for showing him roots i mean your child is 8 he can see terrible things if he watches the news i mean (wheres maddie)

its real end of the day roots is a show that reflects what has happened to black people while im sure many would say its wrong it doesnt stop it from being what really happened, its good for any one to see it and then put that aside and carry on with their lives but to be ignorant to it is not good either.

black people were killed and tortured and made slaves cos we were BLACK why should any black youth NOT know this just like why should any white youth not know what a union jack is (not the best example but history is history no matter how upsetting it is).

there are people that let their kids play grand theft auto ALONE in their bedroom.

think on it.

also consider what children the same age as your son went through during the slave trade im sure watching roots could be a bit much for a child but i would imagine actually LIVING through it is far worse and im sure no white person was concerned then so just let them see it i wont front im not on point with all my black history as much as id like to and my son is 9 i do intend to read books of similar topics to him and watch roots just like i intend to teach him about safe sex when he gets to the right age.

My thorts exactly, loved comment about parents letting their children play GTA in their rooms- would teachin them a little of thier black history insight the same violence and small minded ness that such games on our shelves today potentially do.

one of the reasons that promptd me to start his thread is that one of my male friends also a father of a 6 year old allows him to play such games as GTA, saints row and 50 cents GR or DT game for 21 yr olds- he says he allows this because it it depicts real life apposed to exposing him to the fakery that is portrayed through age appropriate games. in my words.

now his son knows about guns, drugs, pimps, hoes and completing challenges like beating working girls up and conducting drive bys which in the game earn you respect points- is that real life?
