THE SCENE: JAMAICA, A LONG TIME AGO

THE AFRICAN MAN SPEAKS...............

today i heard garvey talking

what a great inspiration, that man is?

he spoke of home - africa seems so distant - i hate this poverty

garvey has vision

he knows we deserve much more than this

he says independence will return to africa, we will even get it here in jamaica

my grandfather slaved then set off into the hills – and reasoned with the men of culture

he taught me about freedom - africa

then he died

and i began to forget his words of liberation

today i heard garvey talking

garvey made me remember

History is a people's memory, and without a memory, man is demoted to the lower animals

Breadfruit, thanks for writing this,

I really enjoyed reading it. This is the kind of poetry I want to start writing myself, with historical angles. But sadlyI have to admit, my knowledge about black history (what I THOUGHT I knew!)reallyneeds work. But imrectifying this daily!

Thats one of the reasons I love this site so much, a wealth of information from the peeople hereis brillaint!

God Bless the black intellectuals!
