Any rimary teachers?

Hi, i'm currantly doing a PGCE and just wondered if there were any other primary teachers around the forum. hare views/opinions/stresses/curriculum changes that piss you off!!

oops, title should obviously have said "Primary" teachers!! but rimary teachers feel free to respond too!!

Come on guys, 58 views and no replies?!?! I know there is a bit of a typo in the title of this thread, but it should be obvious what it is about. If you are not a Primary teach (or secondary for that matter) and if you don't know any, why 'view' the thread? I was really hoping to connect with some other black primary teachers so we could swap pupil/ colleague / governemnt bashing stories as well as effective lesson plans, great kid stories,the best unionsand behaviour management tips etc. Oh well!! I know y'all are out there coz i had a few myself and i know of a few now. If you know one, get 'em to sign up to blacknet and chat to me!!

Hey! I also doing a PGCE banana.gif I've just finished my first placement and loved it. Frustrated by the endless writing observations and long ass lesson plans, does your uni give you all these tasks to do while on placement? But loving the teaching, the children (i had yr 2) So far i have a few opinions on things in school, but maybe when i start to teach for a few years they'll change. confused3 One thing that won't change about me is that, maths and literacy are not the only subjects in primary school - most schools don't encourage drama and art etc. which for some children is a way of building confidence and expression. anyway it's nice to know that there is someone i can express my ups and downs about the course and teaching and hear your experiencesbanana.gif

well im still @ uni now, but i am planning on applying to the london institute to do my PGCE to teach secondary school English Lit. I here that that London Institute want a portfolio of experence but I have none!!! so do peeps think it would be best to mayb volunteer for a year, then go for it or do it in sept, and hope my degree result sells me!!

Hell yes!! I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. So far we have had a one week placement and five 1 day a week visits at our schools before the actual six week placement starts in Jan. As well as the regular lesson planning and teaching, we have to do a SEN assignment and assessment of six focus children each week in maths, science and the 3 POS in english. Not including the sen child/ren, thats 30 assessments a week!! plus we have to do a whole class tracking record for the core subjects. You can forget me teaching any foundatin subjects on THIS placement!! I have to do a full literacy topic (newspaper reporting) and a full science topic (gases around us). completley agree. the problem is, with year two and six teachers end up teaching to the sats and foundation subjects lose priority. I will be trying to make my lesson planning as cross curricular and include as much VAK as possible.

I did voluntary before i started my PGCE. I'm guessing you live in London. Get in touch with your local borough about opportunities to volunteer with schools or home work clubs. Two organizations i volunteered for were Voluntary Reading Help and the Education Business Partnership. I think these two groups work in most boroughs, or maybe only south london ones. I also volunteered for an organisation called Josef's House which was a homework/saturday/summer club. Good Luck!! I wouldn't say the uni would write you off complelty without experience, but those who have it will be considered before you. Don't worry about being to young/old for the course. In my group alone there are ages from 21 to 48!! Plus the course itself is only a year. (less, really, it starts in sept and finishes in june). Its A LOT of work (see previous rants!!) but if you are dedicated and ORGANIZED (can't stress that ENOUGH!!) you can do it!!

PS @ Seeking. Have you joined any unions yet or had any advice about it? I was reading the TES forum before my course and there seemed to be a general consensus that you should join one while on your course (after much research into them,of course) i think somethin like that was mentioned on our first day, but nothing since. Should i worry about this, or just wait tili get my first job and see what my colleagues say?

We were told that in our first week as well, but nothing else was said about it. my uni is so crap that no one even came in to speak to us about unions. But after reading TES i joined NUT the number is 08453001669 that came recommended from most. It's free for students so you may as well join now. Some of the things they send are really helpful - courses, ideas for lessons (i need all the help i can get with that!) and general articles. Other than that i can't really offer much help, cos my uni has thrown us in at the deep end with no armbands! and girl, I can barely swim!)bighairlol

Damn, girl, i know EXACTLY how you feel!!! My uni is soooooo disorganized its untrue!! we were supposed to have a GPS session on writing a CV and applying for a job, then it got cancelled right before our first portfolio assessment where we needed to include a CV and personal statement!!! Thanks for the NUT hook up. I will try and contact them after Christmas.

I totally agree with you, that's why i wanted to be a teacher. Being brought up in a white middle class area and being taught by white middle class teachers i experienced these warped views and it did effect me when i was in primary. At that age (infants)kids are impressionable and they think their teachers know all, so whatever the teachers views and ideas were i soaked that s*** up like a sponge. So i hope to bring into my classroom (hopefully) children with open minds and hearts - the foundation of a good person. I hope i can project not only my quirky personality, but also my inner calmness and acceptance of all. Anyway you could say that at the moment i am seeking togetherness for all.

I thought that i was the only one that had the privilege of a disorganized uni! I know i ain't the most organized but i expected a little more. but don't worry girl, between the both of us we'll have this teacher training on lock. we'll fill in each others blanks - but i warn you, you may be filling in a whole lot of stuff for me!niceone.gif But let's say something positive, we don't want to put anyone off now! Anyone wanting to teach do it - children are beautiful mini adults who have not yet experienced too much of the crap the world has to offer. The children in my class were wonderful - 21 completely different people! the actual teaching was great, if only there was a way to get rid of all the other junk ... offtopic.gif i said i was going to be postive... !
