Your correct on mobile phones in Africa. This suprise growth which shocked the industry has caught the attention of a NY Times journalist showing that Africans can make money off the growing phenomenon.

Bekowe Skhakhane of South Africa uses her cellphone to talk to her husband, who works in a steel factory 250 miles away.

and

Ester Nkwanyana charges her neighbors' cellphones for a small fee using a car battery. Africa's cellphone boom has taken the industry by surprise.

I think it good for it lets many types of folks old and young participate using technology to strengthen communication. Also impress with finding new uses for common things such as car batteries and such.

How do they handle recharging? How is reliable electric power distribution? Do they have solar chargers?

Thatspart of the reason why I want to/am studying Import/Export there are solar chargers and they're not that expencive... would feel sad for messing up that womans business butit looks like shes got an unfair monopoly on the town market anyway and solar chargers would kick ass and cause less pollution.

P.s. She must be ingenious, hooking up a mobile phone charger to a car battery?! Brilliant!

This is what you want, what you really really want!

Funny thing is, and I think a lot of Politicians are afraid of stuff like this... Afrika has more space for development than near enough any stuck in time western counrty... if you look around world wide you'll find that England and America are really far behind with technology and infrastructure... I remember going on a trip to Portugal a newly developed country (just shows how slow THEY are) and being amazed at their unerground system... it kicks ass compared to ANYTHING 'we' (understanding that you may not be in England) have in ye' olde blighty. Even things like solar powered chargers... things like this are things of the future but the west is so slow and self inflated that they can't keep up and would rather portray everyone else (not just us) as backwards than keep up...
