What is the current employment condition in the UK, is there a high unemployment rate?

I have long since forgotten the old thinking that you are hired into a company for life or "from cradle to grave". Do you share in this opinion?

When was last time you got a decent pay increase? Was it due to a layoff and subsequent new job?

Is higher education good for getting a job or keeping a job? What do you think?

Hey dmg,

Unemployment is said to be high in our communities which is what has given rise to many back to work schemes, more jobs being available and regulated recruitment practices. The government drives imply that social inclusion and ethnic diversity is something to recognize and embrace....so then how is it that we are still trying so hard to get jobs we consider to be decent??

If we take a further look at the type of jobs that are available and the pay being offered for certain jobs the social exclusion still occurs. It's more controlled but when you are looking for work because of course you've got to eat...anything will sometimes have to do.

You can get more certificates and training to inccrease your chances of success but you also have to really manage yourself and identify your skills to truly progress....I soon come hubby's just called me to watch some skills Ronaldenio's (?) on T4..

I agree with you that a job is not for life too. You usually get a pay rise as you progress in the company but employee progression in reality is not always a priority unfortunately.

I got a rise when I got a new job but also when I took on more responsibilites. If you are looking for a rise while you are in your job then showing your capabilites can help prove your suitability to do the job or at least line you up for a good back up when you apply for the next higher job you go for. Using your initiative can be a good thing too but tread carefully because the power struggles can get tough.

Higher education is also good for your own progress because you get more insight into the world of work and the field that you're in but I've found that I am using more of that now that I am working for myself so it does pay off eventually

It's great to hear you have your business.

I would have responded sooner, but I'm actively searching for new employment.

My company was bought out by a larger company, and now I must wait to see my fate. Preparing for the worst, I've started interviewing with other companies.

My desire is to move out of my current industry. It's totally unstable.

I would like to settle into a job for the next 8 to 10 years which probably isn't possible but I can only try.
