Greetings Everyone,

In my time of dealing with other businesses I am finding that professionalism seems to be a word with quite a broad meaning for many of us who use it. I have just come off the phone to an employeron behalf ofone of my current clientswho was so defensive without reason that once again I have to wonder how these people get in these roles.

This woman was in Human Resources which is where one could be mistaken for thinking should be the best of them when it comes to communication or liaison with external clients but I have to say I would never use their serviceout ofmy own choice.

Anyway to me this is a perfect example of how NOT to be but what I wanted to know from your persepctive for future reference and business development is this:

Using 3 words if you can WHAT IS PROFESSIONALISM TO YOU?

“If people around you aren't going anywhere, if their dreams are no bigger than hanging out on the corner, or if they're dragging you down, get rid of them. Negative people can sap your energy so fast, and they can take your dreams from you, too.”

In sets of three:

KEEP YOUR PROMISES

Do what you say you'll do, when you'll say you'll do it - and own up if you don't

DIGNITY AND RESPECT

We teach people how to treat us - if you start from a place of dignity and respect, it ismost likely togenerate (not guarantee)a similar response

DO IT NOW

Right or wrong, we live in a world where speed of response sometimes makes the difference in hopw your product/service is seen. It may not always matter - but where it does, do it.

Mind your wants, 'cos somebody wants your mind

For the record I see the label professional as ill conceived and nothing I would personally label myself as - any more than I would amateur. I've got standards and a way about going about things that are just me. I guess labels like this are only required when people of different standards or class like to comapre or compete themselves against you.

I see it as proffessionalism is a word in the English Dictionary to describe its exact meaning.

Trying to be happy at work when your not. Actually you hate it even with the salary.

Trying to be work differently but use the same method of approach on everyone withoutany consideration. Especially if you have a wide range of customers

If your an aloof boss looking and treating everyone with the same tired brush.

But service is service to me. I do not consider it professionalism.

Professionalism in my opinion has become very biased these days and is abusive.

I think it depends on the field that one works in.

For me it would be 1. Boundaries between myself and the clients/service users that I deliver service to. 2. Excellent communication skills as I liaise within a multi discplined team who range from probation officers, Magistrates and substance misuse workers. 3. Knowledge ofthe work which I do. I find that this is helpful not only to the clientsthat Iwork with but also for the other proffessionals that I come into contact with so that they know who I am and what I do.This way I am accountable for the work which I do.
